No sensor bar needed for the Wii

I just saw this on G4. Remove the Wii sensor bar and take 2 candles and put them in front of your Tv, about a foot apart. Now light them. Give it a try, it works!

So then what exactly is it that gets done by the sensor bar that is replicated by the candles?

Infrared Light. See its called the "sensor bar," but it doesn't really sense anything. The control actually does the sensing, and the bar just emits IR, which can be easily and successfully done with two candles instead. However with all the reports of people's wrist bands breaking how long before we get the, "Wii burned down my house after I accidentally knocked over a candle," reports.
