I firmly believe SONY is banking that people will buy the PS3 for the same reason many people brought the PS2. For both GAMING & MOVIE Playing purposes. The addition off a DVD Player with the PS2 was a BIG selling point & actually helped move the DVD Format in the right direction.

SONY is hoping this also hold's true for BLU-RAY as this format is used for both. I think this might back-fire. Simply because the Gaming & Movie Industry are not what they use to be 5 years ago.

When I signed up for Playstation Network there was a Sony Survey that popped up on the screen. It ask questions like which consoles do you own, which do you plan to buy.

Then they asked PS3 related questions like, why did you buy a PS3 and do you plan on using it to watch Hi-Def movies. I answered NO.

Let me throw out a question here:

If you simply want a PS3 as a gaming device, and you can get that in a 360 for less, why do you care? If you buy a PS3, you're buying it with Blu-Ray whether you want it or not.

To use a previous example, people can no longer buy the mainstream ipod and NOT have video capabilities. It's not like people are complaining that they HAVE to buy an ipod now with video when all they want is music... Same thing here. You have other choices, some people are buying into the hype... so? I'm enjoying my 360, and knowing people are craving the PS3 isn't causing me to enjoy it any less...

I sold my ps3 on ebay. I might buy one come this spring but only for the show. If 2k7 is a good game then i wont even bother cause i love my 360. Mlb the show is really the only game that im interested in from sony. Since their baseketball game was horrible ill wait and see how the mlb game will be.

That's the big thing. I love my 360. But when you break down the price, IF you want High Defition for DVD, and you want WiFi, the 60GB PS3 is the better deal. It's just out a year later, and doesn't have the quality of titles that the 360 does at this point.

EG, don't you get HD for DVD (BR) with both models?

I thought the only difference was the WiFi, extra 40GB, and Memory Card Reader between both models.

With almost all my gaming systems that I have owned and had CD/DVD media capabilities, I only tested those capabilities once. I still have not put a DVD in my 360. I worry the thing crapping out on me while playing games, why would I want it to meet it's untimely death while watching a DVD.

I have always been in belief that I already have standalone dvd players at home that I would rather use. Same goes with the PS3, when I get one I'll test the BluRay player but won't watch movies on it. I would rather buy a standalone HD-DVD or BR player for my movie viewing.

Only reason why I want a PS3 is because I'm a hardcore gamer + there are exclusives that I want to play, it's not for that stupid BR Player.

You do, what I meant was..

PS3 - 60 gig HDD, Blu Ray, Wi Fi, memory card reader = $600

360 - 20 gig HDD = $400
WiFi = $100
HD DVD player = $200

That's $700

And Sony said the 360 was the "xbox 1.5" . PS3 is actually a good deal if you are in the market for a Blue Ray Player. We should all hope all 3 consoles do well (360, Wii and PS3), the last thing we need is a monopoly on consoles !!!!!

The bottom line is both consoles are equal. With the 360, you have a choice if you want the HD-DVD. I think MS did the right thing. Sony on the other hand really had no choice. They are the major player in the Blue Ray and it would be very dumb not to get as many Blue Ray players out there as possible. Will i be the right decision??? Time will tell. I personally feel both formats will survive. We will probably see more and more DVD players that play both formats.

I justified buying my PS2 at the original price because it was also a DVD player. I still use it to watch movies. However, I didn't need to buy a new TV to enjoy that aspect unlike Blue Ray. For those without an HDTV, this new feature is useless (for now).

But not everyone thinks like that. Consider yourself lucky that you can buy every single new game that comes out. A good portion of the people that drop $600 on a next gen system are damn well happy they're going to have a Blu-Ray DVD player in their game system.... because they are who Sony is targeting: the general public. It's no longer about the hardcore gamers. Not saying I agree with it, I'm just calling a spade a spade.

Not many people had both an Xbox and PS2 for a majority of "current-gen." They had one or the other. You find guys like us on message boards that have the luxury of purchasing both... that's just going to continue to diminish as this form of entertainment continues to skyrocket in price. Games used to be $40... then $50... now $60. All this as the media gets cheaper, but the development costs do not. Add to that these companies no longer view your system as a "game machine" and things are going to progressively get worse. (BTW, yes I know SNES games were $60 a pop...)

Ever think your "Nintendo" would be able to play music, movies, games, surf the internet and cut some nice julian fries? Nope. And the lines are only going to become blurred even more as this media convergence trend continues.

I wish I could get every single game that comes out. You do make some solid points that with some companies, it isn't about the hardcore gamer anymore and yes they are trying to rope in the casual gamer as they already know they have the hardcore gamers in their grasp.

I just hope that systems don't start exceeding the $600 mark down the road, man would that be something else.

I'm sitting this one out until multi-format boxes are REALLY affordable, hopefully within the next few years. In the meantime, I'm betting that HD content will be available via PPV soon, and with a wider variety of HD premium movie channels (thus available for DVR'ing) likely to be up and running in the next year or so, BR/HD-DVD are both overkill for the non-videophile commoner like myself, IMO. I haven't really rented or bought a DVD in quite awhile with most recent flicks available on-demand, and I'm certainly not going to let Sony bend me over for an extra 200 for something I don't need or even want. I'd cop a PS3 in a heartbeat if the G.A.M.E.S. were significanty better, but they can stick their wi-fi, BR, and all that other junk where the sun don't shine.

I honestly believe the impending flood of digital delivery is going to make an a$$ out of Sony's plans for worldwide media domination. :y4:

I don't understand the way most people think.

Statement #1 that is often made:

"Sony is forcing Blu-ray down peoples throats while Microsoft gives you a choice"

Then, these same people will say the following:

"I could care less about playing movies on my console."

Well, the "forcing" that people are referring to only has to do with movies, not games, so what the hell is the problem with this?

Now, lets look at something else. The games for the PS3 are on Blu-ray and the games for the 360 are on DVD. This is a big advantage for the exclusive PS3 titles. Microsoft has seriously limited developers by FORCING them to use dvd's for their games. Sony is allowing developers to use Blu-ray for their games. Resistance is over 20 gigs, a damn launch title is already more than double a dual layer dvd. This is an advantage, and will probably become more of an advantage as years go on.

Now, even with those advantages Sony has a, possibly large, problem. If someone wants a next gen console and they don't care about Sony's exclusive games, then there is virtually ZERO reason to buy a PS3. Why pay $200 extra for the same games? Sony is highly dependent on their exclusive titles to sell their system. There's a lot of pressure on Sony to produce excellent 1st party titles to keep giving people a reason to spend the extra money on PS3's.
