Sony says it would be "rather short-sighted" to suggest there won't be a PlayStation 4, after Nomura analyst Yuta Sakurai did just that.

Speaking to the Financial Times in the wake of Sony's decision to to promote Kaz Hirai, Sakurai said he thought SCE's future would be determined by the former US boss's relationship with worldwide studios boss Phil Harrison.

But far more interesting were his thoughts on Sony's direction. "The appointment of Hirai could be the start of a shift from hardware to software," he suggested. "I cannot now imagine a PlayStation 4." (You think you've got it bad, Yuta - most of us in Europe cannot now imagine a PlayStation 3.)

Inevitably, Sony has responded, with US spokesperson Dave Karraker telling GameSpot: "Following the launch of the PlayStation 3 just a few weeks ago, and witnessing the huge consumer demand for the product, I think it would be rather short-sighted for anyone to predict there might not be a next generation of PlayStation product."

Indeed, Sony's never made any suggestion that it plans to stop with PS3 - Hirai himself having noted that a PS4 is in his plans, and Phil Harrison having speculated on whether it will use discs or an e-distribution model.

well MS's xbox division as a whole is already in the hole. They lost 4 billion on the frist xbox in 4 years. The 360 will have to make some serious profit to make that back quickly.

It's funny because I read an article somewhere where they said Microsofts cash reserves are 46 billion dollars where as Sony's are only 7 billion now who would really win in a war of attrition.

I don't see this as Sony's last system. Their only cash cow is the Playstation brand. The PS2 put them in the red and they turned that in gains. I suspect the PS3 will be the same.

The playstation name is embedded into people's heads like the Nintendo name brand. When I was buying the PS3 yesterday, the one kid at Best Buy that was ringing me out actually told me that he heard the graphics were better on the PS3 than the 360. Then the other BB employee comes to take the voucher from me so he can get me the system, so the dude at the register starts telling him about the graphics on the PS3.

I then proceeded to tell him that both units have comprable graphics. It goes to show how many people have no clue.

Just like I posted in my impressions, I never once felt that the PS3 was going to kick the bucket like I fear everytime I turn on the 360. All my life I was a Nintendo fan up until the original playstation, then the xbox came along which really made me jump onboard and away from Sony. The 360 comes along and I'm still riding the xbox wave, but now Nintendo is winning me back with the Wii and I'm rather impressed with the design and interface of the PS3.

Yes, the Playstation brand is as popular as the Nintendo brand.

I would not be surprised if Sony gives up because they are already digging their grave. The Playstation brand could become a huge money pit and this would be a huge strike against Sony.

The whole console video game market could crash and the PC could become the dominate platform again. The PCs in the not too distant future will be head and shoulders more powerful than both the PS3 and XBOX 360 and easier to develop for.

It says a lot about the person. I'm sure he is a smart guy but it is one thing to say a company is going to bow out if Sony were new or didn't put much into this, but excluding the extremely high amount of the name "playstation" being known and that it's sold hundreds of millions of dollars, it's crazy to say this will be there last console two weeks after launch, I would take something at face value possibly a year after launch when we know how it is doing, game selection, sales, etc.

MotorStorm Developer Already Thinking About PS4
Believes the way development works is going to change.

PlayStation 3 has been released less than a month and one studio's already looking at the next set of hardware. Evolution Studios, the group responsible for PS3's flagship racer MotorStorm, told Develop Magazine they've already started looking down the road. Why? Because they predict the entire structure of developing games will change by 2011 and they want to be prepared.

"Right now, I'm already thinking about the PlayStation 4-era and beyond. That's the way we need to think now in this business," said CEO Martin Kenwright. "The development business model is going to change beyond all belief over the next few years. So what we're looking at is balancing long-term aims while consolidating our position."

To Kenwright, however, this forward-thinking mentality isn't new; they were doing the same thing while working on PlayStation 2 games. "When we were making PS2 games we were thinking of PS3-type specs as our bar for World Rally. Now we're on PS3 we're thinking about what aiming for the PS4 territory would allow us to achieve," he said.

That sounds like to me that developers are frustrated with the tools they are left with for the PS3 and have conceded to an extent. Looking "down the road" 30 days after launch speaks volumes of what really is going on at Sony.

They've released ONE PS3 game and already is quoted as saying, "Now we're on PS3 we're thinking about what aiming for the PS4 territory would allow us to achieve"--less than 30 days after released!

This is laughable and pathetic.

I unfortunately don't see it that way because the comment came from a 1st party developer. I see it as a Sony developer trying to put the rumor to rest that Sony was getting out of the hardware business.

Some of the Sony games coming up look very solid from Motorstorm to Warhawk. I'd say in a year or two it will be hard to tell what platform each game is running on, just a hunch.
