    Blu-Ray Already Ripped on PS3

    Blu-Ray Already Ripped on PS3

December 1, 2006 - As soon as we installed Linux on our office PS3, it was clear that trouble would be brewing quickly. We began taking bets on how soon someone would hack the PS3. While we haven't heard of anyone truly cracking the PS3 software yet, thanks to Linux, Blu-Ray movies are now being ripped onto the PS3 hard drive.

Multiple sites, including PVRWire, are reporting on gamers illegally copying movies to the PS3 hard drive. Once the large file is on the hard drive, it's possible that someone could figure out a way to burn them.

It only took a few days, but already the Linux PS3 has enabled piracy. As the months continue, users are certain to find other ways to exploit Sony's new console. The fault lies with those committing the crime as the majority of those who download Terra Soft's Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 are likely doing so legitimately

this looks like the dreamcast. Piracy was the main reason that console died with so many good games. Sony and their engineers(sp?) better find a way to lock this system up. Next are the games and then it's over.

Interesting. Wasn't Sony touting the blu-ray as being 100% anti-piracy?

They'll probably start fixing it with firmware updates. They did that with the PSP to keep people from playing ROMs.

Yup, and the stupid saps that are pirating install a firmware update.....................................BRICK!

If Sony makes it to where with the games, you need to have the latest firmware update or the game doesn't work like the PSP, then the piracy will somewhat be cutdown.

That's why they keep releasing updates for the PSP to counter "piracy" and the homebrew crowd.

no it wasn't. Blaming piracy is taking the easy way out. The ps2 owned the dreamcast's *** with better 3rd party support and overall hype.

The dumping of a BD image dosn't mean much. there is almost no way for a game image to run inside linux. Sony made it that way. I highly doubt the ps3 will let you do what you can with the ps2, which is download a game, put it on an internal HDD and run the game with HDL.

Once how-to's and methods are discussed, then it may be forbidden.

....since its a hot topic now.....

That was kind of fast. Hasn't even been a week and this stuff is already hitting the airwaves. I for one definitely want to see how far this is going and when Sony will handle the business. Plus, the firmware updates won't mean anything if the PS3 doesn't require it for the movies. If they continue to do this, then you can basically throw that format thing out the window. I'm speechless because I was at least waiting for a couple of months before we heard anything. Definitely keeping an eye out for this stuff.

Couldn't someone just take the downloaded movie off of their hard drive and then download the update without messing up the system?

+ the piracy really screwed them up. There were many factors in the demise of SEGA's hardware business, not just Sony putting them out.

I totally forgot how great all the PS2 launch games were compared to the DC. Piracy was the main factor. If 10 people bought a DC and only 2 had original copies of games it was not good at all. There were a lot of factors why the PS2 was more popular then the DC and that's another place and another useless zombie conversation.

So can you provide proof that SONY made it impossible to run BD images? The PS3 acts like a PS2, has a HDD (ugly things happen when people are able to modify game save files), and seems to be as hackable as the PSP (which seem to run the same GUI...not good at all). Let’s not even get into impossible and doubts here. Nothing is impossible nowadays.

The PS3 is trying to bank on Blueray movies and if you think this won't hurt them you're sadly mistaken. The DVD movies piracy loses are over 10+ billion dollars yearly (supposedly). Blueray is just starting and they are already able to dumb the movie. Big movie companies are looking for security and this is a slap in the face to Sony and can be translated the wrong way when $$ is involved. If Sony doesn't do anything about this, HD-DVD players will be the next DVD format and you can easily label the PS3 as just a game console and not an all around media device.
