3 Deputies on leave after shooting PS3 thief suspect
Sad story out of the town I used to call home.

Re: 3 Deputies on leave after shooting PS3 thief suspect
Strickland and Mills were charged in connection with an incident on Nov. 17, the day the new PlayStation 3 video game system was released. UNCW student Justin Raines had waited in line for about three days to be among the first to buy the console at Wal-Mart on Sigmon Road near the university. He purchased two for $641 apiece.
When Raines went to unload them from his car at his on-campus apartment complex, four men drove up in a gold Pontiac G6. One of them got out and hit Raines repeatedly with a six-inch blunt object, knocking him to the ground, while another man took the video game systems he had just bought. -

Sad as in pathetic. That's what I meant. Do I feel sorry for the kid that got shot? Maybe a little, provided he didn't do anything to warrant being shot. But I feel a hell of a lot worse for the kid who got his *** kicked for his two PS3's that he waited in line for 3 days to get, even if he did plan on selling them.Comment

Re: 3 Deputies on leave after shooting PS3 thief suspect
Rhoton, Strickland's roommate, has said deputies shot Strickland as he went to open the door. He said they broke down the door and shot his roommate in the living room.
Rhoton said a hunting rifle and two shotguns were in the house but were unloaded and in Strickland's room. He also said Strickland might have been holding a PlayStation controller in his hand when he approached the front door.
I would hope that the police wouldn't break into homes guns blazing, even if they have a warrant for someone convicted of theft. Theft is certainly worthy of punishment, but not death.
I really hope there is more to the story relating to the shooting that what's being told, because as it stands it seems ridiculous to shoot someone in the circumstances above.Enjoy football? Enjoy Goal Line Blitz!Comment

Not sure where I remember seeing it but I believe it was stated that he answered the door with the PS3 controller in his hand. Holding it across the middle with the hand-hold point towards the door could certainly lend itself to looking like a gun in a quick moment. Not sure at all if thats what happened but certainly would be ironic if that were the case.Last edited by gschwendt; 12-05-2006, 12:58 PM.Comment

The article makes it seem like the cops went in guns blazing and shot the kid as he came to the door, which sounds wildly inappropriate to me.Enjoy football? Enjoy Goal Line Blitz!Comment

Well here's a twist to the story. Now they're saying the bullets went through the door first, then into the kid's head and chest.

I have no problem with this story as I put my total faith in the police department and their discretion. Call me naive, but you have to be crazy to do the things that are asked of the PD's. And if there is an object in a dangerous suspect's hand that PD's reasonably believe is a weapon, then they have every right to handle the situation.
This is a sad situation and he did not deserve to die under these circumstances, but don't lose the fact that this punk beat the **** out of a kid and stole from him.
Have to be accountable for every decision you make, even if the outcome is not normally anticipated.Comment

This is some type of stuff you could see happen to drug dealers, and murder warrants. But a kid who stole some consoles. This is a bizarre situation.Comment

Re: 3 Deputies on leave after shooting PS3 thief suspect
It could have easily been switched around. Cops head to question a kid about stealing PS3's, the kid sees them, grabs a gun and opens fire before the cops even see him. Too many cops get killed doing routine things, they can't afford to take any chances.
I feel for the family of the guy who was killed, it was an unfortunate accident/misunderstanding, nobody deserves to die over a stolen PS3, he deserved a few years behind bars, but not to have his life taken, really unfortunate.Comment
