Best Buy Product Replacement Plan... (360 Related)

I posted awhile back that my 360 had gotten the dreaded 3 Rings Of Death... I couldn't remember if I had purchased a protection plan from Best Buy, since I couldn't find the receipt... So I've basically been inactive as a gamer. Yesterday, as I was going through some stuff in my old car, I found the receipt, and WOO HOO, I indeed did purchase a protection plan... So my son and I happily pack up my broken 360 and go out to Best Buy, expecting to just exchange consoles... Here's where it gets interesting.

I am allowed to exchange consoles, but the chick (little Russian cutie for any Raleigh area posters ) tells me that she would discourage me from swapping hard drives, since they could be tied to the hardware failure. Now since I was at the point of playing for the national championship with Tennessee, I was reluctant to part with my hard drive. Then she tells me that they've been doing that with all exchanges... So, I figure, what the heck... I was going to trade in NCAA Football 07 and College Hoops 2k6 towards College Hoops 2k7 anyway, so no big loss. But for the most part, everyone on this board who has had to go through this, has said that there was no issue with leaving out their hard drive, right?

Issue #2... As my exchange is being processed, the dude tells me that at the time of my purchase (late February), the 360 was covered under a 3 month manufacturer's warranty. So, somehow (I'm still trying to figure this out), he comes to the idea that my exchange somehow voids the two year product replacement plan that I shelled out 50 bucks for when I initially bought the 360. Now he tells me that if I want, I need to buy another product replacement plan, which will cover the new 360... That made ZERO sense to me, so I told him, "You're telling me that I need to buy another PRP to cover this 360? Isn't the one that I bought in February a TWO YEAR plan? So anytime I have issues, I should just be able to walk in and make an even exchange." He tells me, "Well, no, that's because the manufacturer's warranty expired..." So I tell him, "Well, that's why you purchase the two year plan, isn't it? So if something happens AFTER the manufacturer's warranty, you're still covered."

Long story short, I had to leave because my wife had to get to work. So I leave the store with my new 360, and I have 30 days to buy a new plan from Best Buy... What I plan on doing is call Best Buy, now that I have some time, and see what the heck is the deal... I shouldn't have to buy another plan, since I bought one at the start...

Yes, PRP's from Best Buy are 1 time use only no matter how many years they are. Once used up on the old console, a new PRP needs to be bought for the new console your purchasing if you want 2 yrs protection on it.

      re: Issue #1

They're right and you should give them your old HDD, they do go bad. If you have a memory card for game saves you can transfer them. Anything purcahed from XBL via a Gold account you can recover your Gamertag and download everything again for free.

      re: Issue #2
They're again and I posted this info many times. During the 90 day Microsoft warranty you are allowed unlimited returns without purchasing a new extended warranty. After the 90 days you are allowed one claim then you'll need to buy another protection plan.

They are correct on both counts.

OK, thanks... I just figured that the Plan meant that anytime it broke down, I could just take it back and get a new one... Thanks, fellaz.

I just replaced my 360 last month. They gave me a new 360 but I did have to buy a new replacement plan. I then found out though, if in case my current 360 has any problems and I need to exchange this unit, I could if I wanted to ask for store credit for the full purchase price minus anything I paid for the PRP's. They would then issue a gift card for the $400. I was thinking of doing this and getting a PS3 if they are readily available.

Yes, that is how the PRP works. If you ask for a gift card, then they will issue it for that amount that you initially spent on the system.

I might do that, too.. Do you need to have anything in writing other than the receipt to do that?

Damn, I'd better call my BB. They told me when I replaced mine that I still had the balance of the warranty left on the new one. She specifically told me that if I had any other problems, I still had another year left.

I think you just need the receipt that shows that you bought the product replacement plan. The rest should be in their computer.

ok, i see some off the wall crap going down in this thread. I am on my 4th XBOX 360, that mean i have replace it 3 times. All 3 times using my best buy Product replacement PLan. When you purchased the PRP, you purchase it for the reason of replacing your product should it break, now, you dont replace it and but a new plan, best buy has to replace the rpoduct for as long as the plan is for. most are 2 year plans on the 360. so each time my 360 broike, i went to best buy and replaced it. it took maybe 5-10 minutes. another thing is that you dont need a receipt neither if u used your best buy card or something, they can look at your receipt, i dont know if they keep track of PRP's which were paid with cash, etc. but the bottom line is that under no circumstances should you guys be shelling out more dough each time your 360 breaks, you PRP is good for a certain time with "unlimited" replacements.

I replaced mine just once, and that is what the guy and girl at the service counter told me. It is for 2 years, so I didn't need to buy another plan. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who was told this. I just hope my second one doesn't crap out on me.

OK, this is disturbing... When did you guys replace your 360s? I'm just wondering if this is some new thing they're starting... I'm gonna call Best Buy HQ and ask what the story is.

I worked for Best Buy for two years and the Product Replacement Plan would cover you one time outside the span of the manufacturer's warranty. You would have to buy a new one with each replacement in these cases if you still wanted to be covered.

I believe that is the company's official stance. However, each store can do whatever they want.
