    hi-def gaming question

I have a 360 and love it, but I do have a question. The games are in DVD format, right? The games can be projected in 480p/720p or 1080i. 480p is not considered hi-def, only 720p and 1080i are. So how do we get true hi-def games in the 360 does not have a HD-DVD drive in it? DVD format is only 480p.

    Re: hi-def gaming question

Games on CDs have been rendered in HD on PCs for years. Rendering graphics and displaying full motion video in real time is different. When you're rendering graphics, the graphics card, processor, etc is doing most of the work.

I don't even think the HD in HD-DVD officially stands for high definition. People just think of it that way because it's simpler.

Okay that makes sense, so animation(graphics)can be in a 720p format on a DVD? It's just movies that have there own HD format? Not trying to debate with you, just trying to understand, hopefully it doesn't sound sarcastic(sp??)

the disk stores how to draw the world around the character for a game, so you aren't really storing the world, just a data 1,0 version and the videocard will put it all together and change it as you move.

The difference for a movie is you have to store all of it on the disk, not the how. So when recording the video to put on the disk, they cannot use the "HD" source that it was originally shot. You have to convert that to a lower quality to get it to fit on the disk. With HD-DVD the compression/disk is a lot better allowing them to put a much higher quality, the "HD".

        Hope that helps.

The video and the game will be in High Definition:

It doesnt matter what format heck it can be on CD and still be in HD for game and the movies. High Defintion isnt tied to what kind of Media you are using, Heck we have been watching High Definition movies for years on the DVD Format with Xvid and DivX. You can fit a Full 3-4 hour High Definition movie on 2 DVDs!

You should be able to play HD video on your Xbox 360 right now if you burn an HD WMV onto a DVD or CD. You just won't be able to burn it as a Video DVD. I think Video DVDs can only be 480p, but any video file of any resolution can be burned on a Data DVD, space permitting.
