Cheap LCD looks great expect way too dark.

I just picked up a 37' Emerson LCD for $700. It looks great except it is not good at displaying dark colors.Shadow detail is really dark. I am connected through component cables and games like 2k7 look great. GOW is just too dark in some spots. I am scared to try Splinter Cell. IS this a common problem with cheap LCDS? I love everything about the TV except this. I have tried messing with the picture but it only helps a little. Maybe this will have to go back.

Good black levels is maybe the biggest weakness of an LCD. Cheaper LCDs probably don't do as good a job as the more expensive ones. You get what you pay for sometimes. That said, try adjusting the screen settings. Make sure your screen isn't too bright. If its too bright, the black levels will be really bad. They probably have some different settings built-in if you don't want to customize yourself.

        1000:1, and 8 ms.

The only way to see in dark interiors is to jack the brightness up. I know someone suggested turning it down but then it seems even darker. On a bright game like 2k7 it looks great and there is no lag/no problem. On GOW it looks great at some parts but it is difficult to see in other parts of the game.

Madden even looked horrible with all the shadow affects.

I am going to to continue messing with the settings to see if I can find something that works or I'll have to return it. I am liking everything even the sd cable looks pretty good. It just is not doing shadow detail well on the 360 games.

Jackup the brightness and then lower the sharpness. That may help.

Just like Candy said drop the sharpness especially for Madden

I just got it yesterday. Jacking the brightness up has helped but it could be better.

Where did you buy the TV from? Would you be willing to spend another $100-$150 dollars on top of the $700?

Walmart is where I got it and I have 90 days to save up for a better one or just keep this one.
I got a great deal on this TV but am willing to spend another $400-500 on top of the 700 to get the best quality picture I can get. I am thinking about getting the westinghouse 37w3. A little more money but it does 1080p and hopefully does better on darks scenes.

                  Do you have any suggestions?

I bought this TV on Black Friday for $499, but it's back up to normal price $899. Excellent TV and the picture quality is very nice. I would recommend the Olevia 32" LCD, but if your looking for 1080p, I think those are over the $1K range.

I was looking at that set. I was hoping to get that on black friday or the 37w3 but they were gone by the time I got there.

It sucks because I like everyithing about the TV I have except for the darkness. Looks like I'll have to check another TV out.

The Olevia is a better TV over some of the Westy's in the same line.

Hey candy u have the same tv my boy got. He got it on black friday as well. I think it's a good tv but nothing compares to samsung when it comes to lcd. I have a samsung tv and the quality is insane. The contrast ration is 4000:1 and 8ms. I have tested out many tv's but this is the best one ive seen. I really recomend spending a little more and getting a better brand for anybody who wants to buy an hdtv. Ive notice the difference. I was actually thinking about buying that westy 1080p but im thinking about it cause i want to see how it looks while playing games on it..
NBA2K is the standard of sports games period.

The Olevia is for my office so I wasn't too worried if the quality was top notch. I'm pretty happy with it and have no complaints.

I do in a few years want to replace our 50" Toshiba HDRP with a Sammy LCD. My brother has one that's a 6000:1 contrast and the picture is nice. I do have a 23" Sammy LCD in our bedroom and the picture is very nice.

The Westinghouse 37" 1080p set is $999 on Amazon, FYI.
