    Re: Checkpoints vs save anywhere

Although a save-anywhere system does remove a lot of frustration, ultimately, I think it takes away from the game. The game loses any sense of suspense, tension, or feeling that your actions have an affect and you will have to live with it. Like has been mentioned, you begin to save before you do ANYTHING, and if it does not turn out the way you wanted, you just load up a previous save.

I like the checkpoint system overall the best. It was done great in GoW, but I think it could use some looking at in R6: Vegas, because it does not always give you a checkpoint after every “big” battle and it is very annoying having to play that battle over and over again because you died afterward (I’m playing on Realistic).

I hate checkpoints, I want to be able to save anytime I want especially since I don't know how long I can play a game at one time and I don't want to have to repeat everything I just did.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

All I know is that Dead Rising had the absolute worst save system in history.

The best IMO is a combination of both like Oblivion uses. Have auto-save checkpoints where you can't save after an auto-save (to avoid saving before a big battle everytime you hit the bad guy). Only thing is, unlike Oblivion I'd limit the number of saves to 3 to 5 saves, so you don't end up saving constantly which can ruin a game in more ways than one (both making it too easy but also consistenly making you obsessed with managing saves and ending up with 8,000 saves).

I don't why people creat a new save each time they save a game. I have three saves that I save over. I save over the older one and continue from there. It doesn't make sense to waste space by making a new save each time.

Yeah I know, but some games save based on time/date so you are not overwriting, it's a new save each time you tell it to save, like Oblivion. I have to be careful in that game to delete some of my old saves or I end up with too many.

In Oblivion, I had 384 saves, lol.... I took me forever to delete those things one at a time...

I did the same thing with oblivion. I never noticed it saving any extras automatically other than the autosave.

I think they played on the computer. For the 360 you just selected a save to overwright. All I ever had was a save before you left the sewers (for creating new characters) and a save for each character.

My favorite save system was found in the champions games (dungeon crawlers) where while you were adventuring you'd come across ave points. Naturally, you could save right there, but coming across them activate a small checkpoint that allowed you to keep adventuring. You also checkpointed as you loaded into a new area.

                          I prefer short checkpoints.

It depends on numerous things...for a tough game I think I'd prefer shorter checkpoints, a normal shooter checkpoints. All others pretty much, save anywhere.

Sports games miss saving in-game badly. (play up to half-time, save your franchise and finish it up the next day)
