    Best Connection Type?

Hey, I am in the process of securing an Xbox 360 and was wondering what the best kind of connection I would use for a 50'' LCD Sony Wega HDTV. I've heard about component, composite (one's good and one's bad right?), S-video, HDMI (although the 360 doesn't support that?) Any clearing up would be nice, as I am a n00b in these matters

HDMI is the best, but it's not yet supported. Followed by component, which comes with the premium Xbox 360.

I've read in some places that a VGA connection is better than Component .... is that correct?

      So, it would go:
      HDMI
      VGA
      Component
      S-Video
      Composite

Right. But some TV's handle VGA in odd ways, often making the component hookup preferable in those instances.

I have the VGA cables hooked up to my Sony 42 3LCD tv, while the picture does look very good after some adjustments, it does not take up the entire screen. No matter what Res. I set it to the best I can do will leave about an inch on each side and 1/2 inch on top and bottom black. I think I may switch back to the component cables.

HDMI is uncompressed audio and video, the cable runs like 80-100 bucks when I bought one.

HDMI vs. Component often comes down to how your display handles the input.
HDMI skips a "step" in that it keeps the signal all digital, instead of going digital to analog(component) back to digital(in your display).
The D/A step is pretty seamless, though and in real world application, you may or may not see improvement using HDMI,and in fact may find component preferable.
The most practical advantage of HDMI is that it carries audio as well as video, unlike component.

There are sources online like monoprice or blue jeans cable that carry HDMI cables for far less than 100 bucks.

Does your tv support 1080p? If so, then find out if it supports 1080p over component. If not, then go with VGA as component only supports up to 1080i on most tv sets. If your tv does 720p, then you may want to purchase vga and component and return the one with the inferior picture. At this point, HDMI is a non-factor as the 360 does not support it.
