Cannot get Xbox LIVE to work...help!

Have had my 360 for around a year now. I had no problem getting on to live when I got it.

Five months back we moved...

Anyway, I have got a direct CABLE internet connection here. Very fast and reliable. Internet works great.

However...XBOX LIVE will not work. I've tried everything.

If I connect it through the PC, it simply doesn't work.

So...I connect it directly from the cable to the xbox 360 and it all works UNTIL it gets to the DNS part, where it fails everytime.

Because I am using cable internet, do I need a router or something?

Spent 4 hours doing this last night...just about ready to axe murder my 360

Try re-booting the cable modem after hooking it up to the 360. In any case I would suggest getting a router regardless.

I use Comcast where I live. The problem drove me nuts and Comcast was able to provide the solution. If you have the modem connected to a PC and you want to hook it up to the 360/PS3 whatever you need to turn off the modem i.e. unplug it for like 5 seconds.

What that does is it resets all the IP and DNS addresses that were assigned to the PC or the previous device. By disconnecting the power the modem drops the signal from the cable provider and when the modem comes back online it gets a refresh of addresses from your cable provider.

In laymens terms if you have your modem connected to a PC it thinks its still taking to the PC even if you connect it to the 360, PS3 or another PC. When you reset it by turning it off the modem will now communicate the new device and you should have proper communication.

Boy I hope I got that right cause my head hurts from all that

If you don't reboot the modem after hooking up to the 360 it won't work.

Modem off etc for ages...still fails.

I hook the cable DIRECTLY into the 360...and the IP address works EVERY time.

But...the DNS fails every.single.time.

Turning the modem off...pulling it out...nothing works.

Would a router help at all??

In reality, you should get a router anyways so youcan use your PC and 360 at the same time and avoid the hassle of constantly switching back and forth.

Don't know if it's gonna help the situation, but you should get one anyways.

p.s. make sure you get one that MS recommends on their website. One of the major ones isn't on their list of compatible routers, which won't help if you get that one.

The only worry is that I spent 6 hours changing settings all over my PC and net set up...I've honestly lost track of WTF i changed. Hope that doesn't come back to bite me

Just as an aside...now that I have it running through the PC it is S L O W.

Game demos take forever and a day...

Will buying a router speed things up a lot etc?
