That nasty little Ring of Death

    Hey All.

I wasn't sure if this should've gone in the hardware forum or this one, but anywho...earlier today I had a nasty little experience with the 3 rings of death. Yesterday I took my 360 back to EB and got a brand new one (Hard Drive was acting funny). I was playing some College Hoops (laying the smackdown on Florida, might I add) and all of the sudden...thing shuts off and I see three red lights on the 360.

Immediately, I rush and turn the 360 off. I turn it back on about 5 minutes later and it's working fine.

So...I just survived the rings of death?

But now I'm afraid to return to my gaming, fearing that it may occur once again and this time my 360 may not survive it. Has this ever happened to anyone? I thought after seeing the ROD, the system dies, but mine has obviously survived. What should I do to keep it surviving and prevent the ROD from popping up once more?

    Thanks!

Yeah I'm not sure, I left mine on one time for a few minutes when I had to go do something in another room, I came back and the red lights of death were on so I shut it off for a while, turned it back on and no problems since *knock on wood*, thats been a while back.

Chances are, they'll be back again. If the console is only a day old, you might be able to return it again to EB/GameStop within a 7 day period and they'll replace it. That'd be something to look into anyway.

I think they give you 30 days, or so I was told by my friends who work there. I would definitely call them ASAP and get another system pronto. As long as they have some in stock they should give you another one.

I would not trust a system that failed so quickly out of the box. Also if you have some spare ducketts buy an extended warranty.

I believe the in store return policy is 7 days on a new system, but it might be 30 days. Definately go, as soon as possible.

I would do it today if it's possible.

Problem with that is, I just took my first 360 back Friday because of a screwy hard drive in order to get this one. I bought the first 360 about a month ago and it came with the free warranty and Call of Duty 2. Since I've already exchanged it for a new one once, I'm not sure if they'll let me do it again, especially in such a short span of time. Anyone know if they will? I heard that the warranty voids after your first return and the guy was asking me if I wanted to buy a new warranty when I brought in the first one. Any help?

The best way to find out is to try and they should. If they say no wait for the system to die and then get a replacement with your extended warranty .

p.s. if you bought it at EB they'll exchange it within the first 90 days and you don't have to buy another warranty. After the 90 days you'll need to purchase another warranty.

Anyone bought a 360 from Best Buy and bought their extended warranty? ... and if so, and you had problems, how did the return through them go?

I did and it went very easy. I brought my 360 in, they sent me over to geek squad. I told him the problem and they gave me a new machine in about 5 minutes. One head's up...If you are bringing a machine in past 90 days, you will have to buy a new warranty.

Thanks for the info. And yes, I asked because I know they sell extended warranties for most products, and assumed they would on the 360s, but with thier failure rate, I really wondered if they did for those.
