    PS3 Surround Sound

Has a fix ever been found for the issue where when the PS3 is hooked up to the TV via HDMI, you can't output the sound via Surround Sound?

I have the HDMI cable hooked into the TV and the audio receiver is hooked up to the TV too. When I change my TV input to match the HDMI input, the sound coming out of my surround sound is from the cable stations on the other input. To hear the PS3 sound, I have to mute my surround sound and turn up the TV sound.

How do I get the sound to output via surround sound instead of just the TV. I tried taking composite cables and hooking up the PS3 to the back of the audio receiver but it didnt work.

Is there not a Digital audio input on the PS3 where you can connect the PS3 audio to your receiver like a DVD player using either a digital coaxial or optical cable? Also how many digital inputs do you have on your receiver?

On my receiver I have 3 digital inputs, one is a coaxial input where I hook up my DVD player using a digital coaxial cable and the 2nd is an optical input where I hook my HiDef cable box using an optical cable. I have one digital input left where I would assume I could hook up a 360 or PS3 if I had one. I don't think composite cables would work for digital surround sound since they are not connected to a digital input on your receiver. The HDMI cable will give you direct PS3 sound to the TV speakers but I don't think it will transmit digital sound directly to your receiver.

I think what he means, and this is my issue... My PS3 is hooked up HDMI into my TV, my receiver does not have a HDMI input. So, I also have my receiver hooked up with an optical cable. Now, if I set my sound to the optical cable, I only get sound out of my receiver, meaning I can't just use my TV for sound if I want.

For example, the PS2 and the 360 both, can have component hooked up to the TV and optical to the receiver and get sound either way without manually having to go change it in the PS3's settings.

I follow you so the OP shouldn't have a problem if he hooks up an optical from the PS3 directly to the receiver and depending on what setting he has can get sound from either the TV or the receiver but they're mutually exclusive. I'm confused as to what patch could fix this as long as the PS3 has an output for the optical cable it should work for surrond sound.

Hmm, I'll pick up an optical cable and see if it works. Thanks guys.

Check the back of your receiver to see if there is an input open for optical because I don't know what you have hooked up to it. There should beat least 3 digital inputs on most receivers with 2 being optical.

So I got myself an optical cable and ran it from the back of my receiver in one of the optical slots to the back of the PS3. Changed my sound settings to optical and the sound from the cable (from my other tv input) goes away like it should.. but there's no PS3 sound.

                Any other ideas?

Dont know what to tell you Bro. Theoretically it should work, the only thing I would advise is play around with your receiver and PS3 settings every which way possible. Check the receiver manual. What else do you have hooked up to your receiver and how many digital inputs are there? Are they all optical or is there one coaxial input. Do you have a DVD player hooked up with optical in another input on the receiver?

The only thing I could think of is there's maybe a setting on your receiver that might need to be set with the optical input you specifically connected to your PS3 if there are multiple optical inputs. Since I don't have a PS3 it's hard for me to diagnose so someone else with one is gonna have to chime in and describe what they do.

I have an optical cable from the PS3 to my receiver and it works fine. I had to change the "Digital Input" on my receiver to optical, but after that, every works fine.

You have to go into the audio settings and switch the optical output to "bitstream".
