Is it mandatory that I hook up my 360 to the Internet?

I never play Xbox Live or anything like that, but are there any crucial patches for the actual system that I should be concerned with downloading? I've had my system for close to a month and never hooked it up to the net, could I be causing any potential damage?

I'm scratching my head here: If you have broadband and a 360, why wouldn't you get Xbox Live?

Online play, game patches, game downloads, game demos and more. It's $50 per year -- less than the cost of one new 360 game.

It simply amazes me how some try to justify the price of the best multiplayer online service in the world. If you purchase the 12 month Gold Membership at 49.99 that's about $4.16 per month.

I've seen them advertised during the year for $29.99 and $39.99 as well. To answer the IP question if you have broadband it's a not to get Xbox Live.

It's absolutely mandatory. Your system will stop working after 30 days if you don't connect it.

I think he may have been asking whether having the 360 offline somehow damages the machine itself, not whether the Live service was worth the price. If that's the case, then I'm pretty sure the answer is no - you can play the 360 without having it hooked up to high-speed internet all you want. As others have mentioned, I'm not sure why you'd want to do that if you could have it connected, but I wouldn't worry about damaging the machine.

You could hook it up and just stay with the free silver package. You won't be able to play multiplayer, but you'll still be able to download game patches and system updates.

Funny, I was actually just going to post this same question. I'm getting a 360 for Christmas but have never played online before. I almost exclusively play sports games and just play out seasons. I do like games like Call of Duty however. I have wireless broadband but i've always heard about lag, cheesers, etc... online. Do you guys still think its worth even for someone in my position? I'd have to spend $100 on the wireless adapter correct? Or is that built in?

Xbox live is most certainly worth it - with the 360, being online allows you to download content, arcade games, etc.. the problem people seem to have is with the "randoms" they play.. that is what the buddy list is for- CoD3 is just too good not to play multiplayer on. Stick to those who are on there & you wont have any problems...

You don't exactly need to hook it up for it to work but you do get the latest updates for the dashboard and certain games, it's upto you.

But like everyone else has been saying Xbox Live is like, one of the greatest things to ever come to a console. If you haven't tried it, you really are missing out on one of the best things for the 360. As for playing cheesers or whatever, my list is almost filled of people from OS and there's always at least 1 person online.

From someone without a finger pointing at you, I'd say get connected because of all the cool things you could do. It does update your system to play games that are BC from the XBOX. It also help to make your dashboard move a lot more smooth. It's not mandatory but it sure does help improve the gameplay a bit. DO IT!! DO IT!!

You should get that connected up to Xbox Live as soon as possible.
