Which PC soundcard for XBOX 360?

I currently have a samsung LCD HD TV which I use for both my 360 gaming and as a monitor for my PC.

Because the two machines are therefore sitting next to each other...and to cut down on space etc...I'd like to use my PC sound (sub + 5 speakers) for the xbox 360.

To link the PC to the 360's HD AV cable...do I simply need a sound card for the PC that has optical input?

Just simply connect an optical cable like the "monster" cable between the 360 and the PC sound card?

If so, are the sound cards that have optical options expensive? Anyone know a good one?

    Any advice very much appreciated!

This is exactly how my setup is configured - I use a 23" Sammy HDTV for my monitor too. Just get a soundcard that has an S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) input - for the optical cable - and you have to make sure it supports Dolby Digital. Plug the optical cable from your 360 into the soundcard input and through the mixer control you can control volume, etc.

Here's an example of a sound card that'll work for you.

My soundcard is an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro. I bought it for about $120 brand new off of Ebay about 2 years ago. Whenever I go to Staples I look at the soundcards and some have SPDIF inputs (the optical kind) and are less than $50. These would probably work, but I'm not totally sure.

My motherboard had SPDIF inputs and outputs (through an add on panel) but the motherboard didn't support Dolby Digital so I had to buy an external soundcard.

If you can't get a hold of one yourself, maybe we could work something out through Ebay - I'll check out Staples and see if their cheap one supports Dolby Digital.

Rather than start a new thread...I am just adding this:

If anyone is looking for a new sound card for the PC, the X-FI is
          a m a z i n g!

Testing this now on music and PC games and it's incredible. Splits the music up like MUCH more expensive recievers I've heard.

          DTS is incredible on movies.

          Great sound card.

Now i know why this thing was 10 times more expensive than the 'basic' card I got when i bought this PC

A really good alternative to spending a lot more on a reciver and full home theatre. This sounds as good.

            nice tips.

any recommendation on some computer speakers.

i have the basic analog and 20w generic "came with computer" speakers hooked through the generic motherboard drive sound card.

As long as the basic one's are okay...it's the sound card that will make the crucial difference.

              i.e. I've replaced a basic card with an X-FI card...same speakers...yet there's a world of difference.

If you do decide to buy a set, Logitech makes some nice speakers.

I have I believe the X-530 5.1 surround sound. Retail is about $79 but Walmart has had them for about $60.
I got mine of Ebay for $40. Great speakers, cheap price makes them better.
                You can't coach That!
