    PSP Impressions?

I'm thinking of getting a PSP b/c I can take it to work, take it on trips, play it in airports etc...

But I've noticed that there aren't many slider threads or roster downloads for the games I play (Madden, NCAA, NBA2k, CH2k, maybe The Show)...

    Is it worth it?

    Is the gameplay good?

Can I hook this to a TV and play it through that when I get to a hotel?

All opinions and thoughts greatly appreciated...

I bought one right after I got a PS3. It's my second go round with this machine. The first time was during the launch of the system. I tried three PSP's and all of them had pixel problems so I got my money back.

I jumped back in recently and as others have said the pixel problem isn't much of an issue anymore. That's not to say it won't happen but I got a 2 year BB warranty with it.

I bought the PSP for several reasons this time and playing PSP games were not on the top of the list. I purchased first as a music player, movie player, PSP games and connect ability with the PS3. The icing on the cake was hearing about PS1 games on the PSP.

Sony is pushing the PS3 to PSP real hard and with the last update you now have remote play. In theory you may be able to download music, movies, videos and games from your PS3 to the PSP without being nowhere near your PS3. All that's required is that the PS3 is on and both have a Wifi connection.

The PSP is now starting to get games with the system first rather than being ports of the PS2 system. Games like Daxter, Syphon Filter, Tekken Resurrection, Metal Gear Ops were all built with the PSP in mind. They play great and look great as well.

If you travel a lot then the PSP is a solid choice although the battery is still a concern, with a typical charge of 4-8 hours depending on what you are doing (Sony sells an extended play battery). The PSP also allows you via wifi to access the web and it also lets you view certain TV channels as well.

If you are looking for a swiss army knife system then the PSP is a great choice IMO. I'm really enjoying my system.

p.s. There's suppose to be an adapter that allows you to view UMD movies on your TV, although I have never seen it.

            Thanks for the input...

I propbably won't use it for the variety of things that you have described...like I said, I just want to play some of my favorite sports titles w/o having to lug a console around...

I'm still on PS2..won;t buy a PS3 until those sports titles are fully developed for that system...most likely around NCAA / Madden '09...I expect EA to continue to take a couple / few years to get it together...

I like the 'Swiss Army Knife' analogy...

I have access to a new system being sold as used for $149.00...when you add in the extra battery...and a couple games it could be worth it IF the thing plays at least as well as a PS2...

I just hate having 'stuff' that sits around...

Anyone else have anything to impart?

            Continued thanks...

I bought one and rarely use it. I just found that all the games are very poor...think 2001...versions of games around now.

              However...my wife loves the PSP.

She's converted heaps of movies over to watch...she plays Lumines a tonne...stores all her photos...

And she takes it to work often. She's a hospital pharmacist and often has to do the night shift. If it's really quiet, the PSP is pretty cool she says

As for a portable, on the go handheld gaming system I never used mine. The load times are atrocious, and the control leaves much to be desired. It sounds real good playing games like Madden, Brothers in Arms, and GTA on the go, but load times make it a chore, and not fun to play. I just got a DS Lite, and WOW! this is handheld gaming, I can pop in a game play 10 minutes, put it in sleep mode for an hour or two, pick it back up and play right where I left off in seconds!

I have a PSP myself but how do you view TV channels on it? I've had it for almost a year I didn't know about this feature, if anyone happens to know could you please let me know how it would be interesting just to see what it looks like.

PSP also has a sleep mode you know that does the exact same thing you are describing.

Correct, all you have to do is turn off the PSP while you're in the game and it will enter sleep mode. When you turn it back on it will start where you left off.

Also works if your battery dies. The system will shut down but if you get it hooked to the adapter it will pick up where you left off

                          Re: PSP Impressions?

I got a PSP last year and I've really enjoyed it. My time to play games has gone down recently, but I still find myself sometimes getting a game of MLB The Show in, while my 360 is sitting there(Although Im hooked to College 2K7 now).

I have mostly sports games. MLB The Show is the best portable game I have ever played. If your a baseball fan then wait till 2007 comes out in 2 months. Another game I've played is NCAA 2007. I mailed the old one in and got a new one without the yardage bug. I gotta say for a handheld it is a really good game. On my trip to Chicago with my girlfriend we played Hot Shots Golf on the way for about 2 hours straight. That game is a good time filler...

If you do alot of traveling or just want a convenient thing to do while ur girl is watching Americas Top Model, then Id buy it. Like the previous posters have said, the PSP is starting to make solid titles and the line up is looking better and better. I prefer playing MLB The Show on PSP over any XBox 360 Baseball games.. But we'll see now that I have a PS3!

Firatly, I'd like to thank everyone who participated...that's one of the many reasons I love this forum...great first hand info...

I finally got the list of available titles from gamefaqs...

The clerk at EB was wrong (surprise!!!)...the NBA2k and CH2k series isn't available...

I might revisit this when baseball (MLB The Show) releases the next effort and I get some impressions...that would lead into NCAA '08 and hopefully NBA2k will surface for next year...

But the load time issues in the previous post and the NCAA glitch described in another also make me wary...

I'm pretty 'type A' about my gameplay...

I'm also not very tech savvy, which along w/ my 'anger management' issues (lol) will mean that holding off on this purchase may not only benefit me, but also those unfortunate enough to have the seats on the plane near me, if this thing doesn't 'cut my mustard'...

Now, what the heck is a DS Lite?

Thanks again to all, and happy gaming...

As I mentioned before the first generation games suffered a lot from long load times. Some of the newer games still do but that's because they are baiscally PS2 games in a PSP UMD.

All the games I have were built around the PSP first. Load times on average are 5 -7 seconds at most. The newer games like Daxter, Metal Gear Ops, Killzone Liberation, Syphon Filter and Tekken were built exclusively for the PSP. Loads times on some of those games are a few seconds at best.
