Is this some New Gamestop policy???

my mom went into gamestop to buy my sister a DS game. she found one and took the empty box to the register to pay and receive the new unopened title.. the guy then opens up the game for her all the while my mom is asking if she doesnt like the game, can we return it. He states NO because its open. and we argue OF COURSE, you OPENED it...

what the hell is up with this?

Return exchanges I can understand but a brandnew game?

If it's the last copy or a box that's open, then they are supposed to put a plastic seal sticker on the side of the box so that way if you return it, you can as it being "unopened" even though the store actually broke the factory seal.
You should ask them for their store manager or DM and point that out.

Yeah, like Zeke said, they should put a seal on the case if it is the last copy/opened box. That employee was either mistaken, or extremely stupid.

        I go with stupid.

No offense to Gamestop, since some of their employees were ok, but on the whole, the managers and workers at Gamestop stores are kind idoits... where as a lot of the EB Games managers and employees were kind of rude and know it alls... there wasn't any kind of happy medium. Again, i know there's exceptions at both branches.

I would have walked out of the store and bought the game somewhere else. I rarely buy games from EB/GS anymore because Target, BB and CC usually have much better pricing on their games anyway.

you need to specify that if she doesn't PLAY the game, you can return it. He was more than likely assuming you meant, you gave it to her, she played it a few days, and decided she didn't like it. Then NO, you can't return it, as it's "opened". however, as stated, usually they put a seal on it, so that if she decided she didn't want it before she played it, she could return it for a full refund. Though most places are going to, if you are the reciever of a gift, you may not get cash for it returned, but in store credit of equal value.

I remember when I was a kid I would go to EB and they would let me return opened, openly admitted, played games and allow me to exchange them as if they were new. If I remember correctly it may have even been able to be done more than once, but you received a different receipt after the first transfer, so a little more nerve was required to try for subsequent transfers.

Good memories. I imagine they just re-shrinkwrapped and sold as new, but it was a great policy, and I can still briefly remember when they started the phase that policy out, and only allowed full exchanges or returns on unopened items.

I never and will never buy a gutted game. I also won't buy a game that looks like it's been opened and re-sealed. To me, it's used. I worked at a Gamestop once, we played the gutted games, they were in the demo units, to me, that's a used game. Unless they give me used game prices, I won't buy it, and I've made that clear every single time they try to sell me one, and trust me, I'm not quiet about it.

Word. I used to do that every week with PS1 games at Gamestop.

I used to ABUSE that policy. I'd be swapping games left and right back in the day. When the policy stopped, I had no reason to shop at those stores. I don't get why anybody does. Games are cheaper a dozen other places...
The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!

Truth. I've only been in those stores once since they stopped that, and that was Thursday because I needed to get my brother Mario Kart for the DS and the shopping centers were too hectic for me to drive to Best Buy

Only reason I go there to shop is because they'll have those dirt cheap classics that you'll find at other stores for the 19.99. Like if you look in the bin, you can get the older SC, Psychonauts, and other used games for cheap. Most of the time, if they don't work, you can bring them back complaining and get an exchange. Never had to though. My girl buys games from there when she's buying new games. I've tried to get her out of that habit but she forgets. Doesn't buy me games too often. I'm not too harsh at those stores only because there are pretty sensible people that I see. I don't get bothered by the stupidness too much, maybe because it's not as rampant as at the stores you all go to.

i dont know man. she argued for a good 10 minutes with atleast 3 other employees about it. I thought atleast, she was quite clear about wanting to return an unopened copy since the main arguing point was the fact they opened our brand new game and ultimately messed with our property. Policy is fine in regards to the last of the bunch getting a sticker, but these dudes don't explain themselves. what Kid wants an opened game, regardless of system?

regardless game was bought elsewhere. we're staying away for good from there. my mom thinks they're trying to scam people by selling "new" games then opening them all the while they are just used games to begin with. lol

I'm glad you and your mom took your business elsewhere that's pretty insulting what they tried to pull off on you guys. I would have done the same, walked out never to come back.

Hey guys, I know you enjoy arguing with your local Gamestops and griping about it online, but if you don't do anything past that nothing is going to happen. FILE A COMPLAINT with your local branches of the Office of the Attorney General in your state and then the Better Business Bureau if you have time. I know here in Massachusetts the Office of the Attorney General collects complaint about businesses from consumers and even mediates the complaints to some degree. In fact, there are 19 different offices that specialize in free mediation services between consumers and businesses. Use the resources that are out there. For example, this one serves Worcester County:

The situation that Ruben has mentioned is exactly the type of thing that I deal with on a daily basis and even after talking to people over the phone they do not go the extra step and actually file a complaint. Use the free services that are out there!!!
