Xbox 360 65nm Die Change DELAYED

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

Over the past generation, when a new console hits the market, the console manufacturer goes on to shrink the die size of the CPU. The benefits are a cheaper chip -- the smaller the die, the more that fit into a manufacturing run -- and cooler temperatures. The Xbox 360 die shrink is going to have to wait a little bit longer.

Originally slated for Q1 2007, the 65nm processors for the Xbox 360 are being delayed until mid-2007. This means gamers are going to have to wait a little bit longer to get those Xbox 360 units that aren't quite so hot; it also means prospective buyers may be waiting a bit longer to see a price drop.
Reducing the die size on the Xbox 360 CPU is a major step to a price reduction, something Microsoft needs right now. Xbox 360 sales are less than smoking and the PS3 and Wii offering up some competition, Microsoft could have used a price drop as an excellent weapon against them. Maybe Microsoft can get the 65nm chips up and running before the PS3 has a chance to entrench itself in Europe.

I wonder if this delay is from marketing to time the entry with the price drop.

I doubt it as this is one of the contributing factors for the 360's unreliabilty. The current CPU's in the 360 generate way too much heat.

Anyone else here have a EB/GameStop warranty. And planning on trading your current 360 in for one of these newer models when they come out?

MY launch system has still been perfect and I have 2 months left on my warranty. I'm not sure if i'll take advantage of the warranty or see how long my 360 goes for until it kicks the bucket.

I'd definately renew the warranty even if you don't get a new 360. You don't want to deal with MS, their crappy return box, and the refurb you get in return.

I asked EB I can't renew my exisiting warranty. I would have to call the third party warranty company and declare my system as not working. Then i'll get something that allows me to turn my system in to EB and they'll give me a new one. At that point I can buy another warranty from them.

That sucks man. But if you were to walk into EB and tell them your console isn't working and you want to exchange it, then you could get a new console and a warranty, right? Another thing I wonder, when you do go to turn it in, do you keep your harddrive? Anyone know from experience?

Well not exactly because my extended warranty was prior to the EB/GS merger. I have a 15 month warranty on my 360 and I don't deal with EB but instead with the third party warranty company.

I can keep the HDD if I want but I see no point to that. I might as well get a new HDD as well. Everything on the HDD I can download again from XBL.
