    360 purchase story...Do I NEED the 360 Warranty?

Just picked up a 360 from Best Buy, after going console-less(except for about 8 months with a rarely turned-on Gamecube) for about 2 years. I was getting the itch to play sports games again, so I picked up FIFA '07 for the Gamecube, which my roommates and I have been having a blast with for about three weeks. Becoming the recent owner of a 42" HDTV Plasma, I couldn't help but cringe a little at the way the GC 480p graphics looked on that thing. That's what pushed me, plus the fact that BB was offering the small deal of a free COD2 and $20 gift card.

Of course, they tried to push the Best Buy PSP on me. 59.99 for two years. Seems a bit much. The 360s have been out for over a year now, have the issues been resolved? Are all the 360 problems a bit overblown? I've read (and even commented on) all the hubbub, but I think I need some more opinions. Is it true that the MS warranty is now a year, or is it still 90 days? How much is the warranty through MS(I haven't even opened the box, but I think I wouldn't want to get it through them anyway because of having to send your console in)?

Get pack to me, so I can decide whether to open this box and blow through some FIFA '07!
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.

The Best Buy warranty is better in my opinion. I'll tell you why. When you mail in your Xbox 360 to MS, you get a refurbished unit, meaning it was previously broken, and was repaired.

You go with Best Buys PSP, and you'll get a Best Buy gift card for the ammount you paid for the 360, which means you'll be getting you a brand new 360.

And yes, they 360 warranty is now 1 year.

With the 1 year warranty given by MS it is a tough call, but I'd still say it is worth $60 to get an in-store warranty. If it breaks you drive down to Best Buy, give them the old unit and come home with a new one. No waiting for weeks and no getting a refurbished unit.

Getting a new unit is huge and why I went with the Best Buy warranty - I believe you have to pay $60 for a warranty for the new unit though since technically you're getting your money back and choosing to buy a new product.

An aside - does anyone know exactly how hard it is to trade in the 360 at Best Buy? My DVD drive has been locking up (refusing to open) but it only does it sporatically. Will they take the thing back or will they refuse if it won't happen to do it when they set the thing up in the store?

Maybe I'm in the minority or just got lucky, but I think MS shipped me a brand new console as a replacement for my broken unit. I had heard the same thing, that I would get a refurbished unit back if they couldn't fix my original box, but given the manufacture date on the box I received from them vs. the date I got it back, I'm thinking it was a new unit. It was manufactured on 9/22/06 and I got it back from them in mid-October. Could be wrong though. Personally I'd go with the Best Buy warranty as well, as instead of a couple weeks shipping time back and forth, you could have it all taken care of with a trip to the store. And you have zero chance of ending up with a repaired console as a replacement!

I never buy extended warranties... but for xbox 360 I believe it is needed.

Absolutely, I never bought a console warranty before the Xbox 360. But it's a must now in my opinion. Even though MS did extend the factory warranty to 1 year.
