Re: Old games that take you back

Kid Icarus and the original Metroid were my favorite games back in the day... well, until Tecmo Super Bowl came out!

As for really old school (for me anyway), my friend and I used to stay up all night playing Utopia on Intellivision EVERY weekend. Good times...
    LET'S GO FLYERS, YANKEES, DOLPHINS!!!

LOL! At least I'm not alone, I did the exact same thing, then I finally got the Atari 7800 version. And yes, I still have it!

Tecmo Bowl, Castlevania (the original, still my favorite non-sports franchise), and NHL '94 (played multiplayer non-stop every night for a few years).

Re: Old games that take you back

I got more than a few games that me and bro still bring up from time to time when we kids.

              NES MEMORIES

Contra-first game I owned on NES. Beat it in the same day we got it. Home of the worlds most famous cheat code. We used to call the end boss "Hoppin' Mad".

Double Dragon-one of the best co-op fighters of the day. The spin kick was the shizznit!!

Ninja Gaiden-platform gaming at its best with one of the most memorable soundtrack IMO. Everything from the cut scenes to the level design was top notch. Tecmo was king back then.

River City Ransom-the game that nobody figured out how to beat. But you'd replay it anyway over and over again.

Double Dribble-who can forget the float from the corner 3 that was money! Or the "create your own dunk" spins we used to do when shooting jumpers under the basket. Or that 1 out of ever 100 games blocked shot you'd see that would fly to the cieling. Or that goddamned Laker's mascot. What was that thing?

              Bad Dudes-2 words: "I'M BAD"!

Pro Wrestling-cant forget that lizards cheat move with the crowbar when the ref turned his head.

Mike Tysons Punch Out-I never beat Iron Mike *sniff sniff* Those random uppercuts still give me nightmares.

Bases Loaded-had a notebook with hundreds of those long *** codes you had to put in to continue your season. Kept my own stats and everything.

              Hoops-greatest 2 on 2 bball game EVA!!

Back later with Atari, Gensis, SNES, Coleco Vision, etc...

OMG!! I had, and still have my notebook for Bases Loaded. I kept every stat for every game. Paste from NJ was a MONSTER!!!

The first Madden for the Genesis, had real numbers, and just cities, like the Jets were New Jersey. I got a NFL book, made a notebook of every number corresponding with the players and played a real NFL season. I think the game only had playoffs, so I played the games, from the book. I got through the entire season too, it was so awesome. I have to find that book, but the Bases Loaded one is in my attic.

dude with the old bard's tale games i would map every single square block of the entire game; the city, the dungeons-- everything! thinking about it now, it was a HUGE undertaking, but i did it. Of course my maps looked nothing like the ones in the walkthrough books that came out for them later, but i digress.

the folder with all those maps is probably still around somewhere at my parents house.

                        Heh.....there are quite a few.

Silent Service and Silent Service II were games that ate my time. I actually got some nautical maps(blanks and I filled them in!) to track my prey. My wife thought I was nuts!(she was/is right )

                        Ultima(any) and Ultima Underworld.

There was a great little spy game WAY BACK called Covert Action. So primitive, but I loved it!

I have boxes and boxes(moving boxes) loaded with old games for the PC. Literally hundreds. I should E-Bay the whole lot. I wonder what I could get?

                        M.K.

Some of my favorites (most of which have already been mentioned):

                          Contra
                          Pitfall
                          Burger Time
                          RBI Baseball
                          Baseball Stars
                          Blades of Steel
                          Double Dribble
                          Ice Hockey

Earl Weaver Baseball (PC) <-- My ALL-TIME Favorite

My friends and I used to have "fantasy" leagues with Earl Weaver. We would hold live drafts and one of the guys would sim all of the games. It was my first fantasy baseball experience...

                          NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers
                          NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins

                            SNES/Genesis

Mortal Kombat--the SNES version with the sand and the Genesis version with the code for blood. Looking back on it, with all the violence in todays games, how in the world was this game mecilessly crucified for its violence?

Sonic the Hedgehog--Innovative game that is still a one of a kind. Did'nt you just used to hate gaining 80+ rings only to fall on a spike and have the damn things scatter all over the place!

Streets of Rage--a great Double Dragon alternate.

                            Earthworm Jim--"WHHAAOOoOoO NELLY"!!

Street Fighter--pretty much revolutionized the fighting genre. Who did'nt pump a billion quaters into the coinop and who did'nt spend hours upon hours smashing friends in vs mode on the consoles. "Yoga Fire"!!

Urban Strike/Jungle Strike--damn I used to love this helicoptor game. Raining missles on simple innocent bystanders was pure crack. Rescuing hostages, shooting down tanks and recking havoc on poor little enemy bases.

WWF Wrestlemania--fun game but the best botton masher always won. Was a little complicated to pull off moves but none of that matters when you go outside the ring and grab that chair or bucket. Bret Hart was the ish in that game.

                            More to come.......

Back before there was Oblivion, Ultima Underworld, or any other first person RPG, there was Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Treasure of Tarmin or just "Tarmin" to me and my boys.

I got it for Christmas from a cousin who hated sports games, and it made me love RPG's as much as I love sports games.
