This is a very smart move on their part. It will allow them to cut down on development time, concentrate on art, gameplay, etc and frankly save money on developing an engine. I believe over the next few years we will see more development houses that concentrate on building a solid engine and selling that to developers for games. This process has started, but I think it will grow substantially in the next few years.

Re: Square signs a deal to use Unreal engine
John Carmack from id and ISI Corp (rFactor) have been doing that for years and they even admit that. I do agree that developers will probably take advantage of software houses that build graphics engines from the ground up. -
Re: Square signs a deal to use Unreal engine
Square has an in-house engine that they developed called White Engine. It's tailored around the PS3. My guess is Square will use UE3 for their multiplatform releases (like the unannounced MMORPG for PS3, 360 and PC).Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Square signs a deal to use Unreal engine
PR reads like their in-house engine is just fine.
However, in order to ensure both game quality and development efficiency for next-generation game systems including consoles, PCs and network titles, Square Enix is now building a technology platform to be used throughout the company utilizing proprietary technologies as well as introducing third-party solutions such as Unreal Engine 3.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
