    Oblivion is still awesome!

I'd been playing Forza a lot but wanted a single player non racing game to play a while. Popped in Oblivion after months, created a new char, and i played for hours. Amazing how fun this game is, and how few games really hook you over a long period like it can. If you played Oblivion a while and then got burned out I recommend popping it in again.

I've considered getting Oblivion recently (I just purchased a PS3 a few weeks ago, and haven't played anything other than The Show and a couple rentals of other games). I have a couple of questions before I take that plunge though:

    - I have never played one of the Elder Scrolls games before, and more than likely will not anytime soon (other than Oblivion). Are the stories interconnected or separate from each other, (ala FF and Dragon Quest)? Will I miss anything I should know if I haven't played Morrowind or any other?

    - I'm currently still on a 20' SDTV (for now, but that might change in the next few weeks). Will I have any problems with unreadable text?

    - The other is more gameplay related.....I've never been much of a fan of single-character RPG's (no party, in other words). Things just seem a little too predictable and repetitious when one person does everything in battle. However, I'm willing to overlook this if the game is that good (and by all accounts I've read, it is). I am aware that battles happen in real time, and it's more of an action RPG, which means this may not bother me as much. Basically, I just want to know if anyone else feels the same way, and if it bothered them while playing this game?

    Thanks in advance.

I still play Oblivion on my pc and I have been enjoying it since day one with the living AI and mods unlimited, I see no reason to get bored.

        1. you don't need to have played the previous elder scrolls. They are all sort of related but not really, so you won't feel lost in the story at all.

        2. no idea how the text is on a sdtv so can't answer that one

        3. The game is not really repetitive at all. There are a ton of different factions in which you can join all of them at different times, the whole map has different scenery depending on location (snow in the north, swamp like in the south, fall type environment in the middle, etc) and there are so many different types of missions. Its not only run and slash but when it is, it's done very well. I think you'll have a lot of fun.

          Re: Oblivion is still awesome!

I was literally just going to make a post in the old Oblivion thread. I've never been so hooked on a game before. There is SO much that you can do it's unreal. I took about an hour and a half just doing arena gladiator matches and made my way to grand champion. Then I thought about how having that much fun for that long doesn't even really effect any storylines, but it was still a blast. If you ever somehow get bored with quests, there are so many different things you can do. Do arena fights, explore unexplored lands, etc. It's literally like living another life.

The only thing i'm not really into is the magic part of the game. I haven't really even bothered using spells or magic on anyone aside from healing potions, which become very handy before some of the higher end gladiator fights. However, i'm sure if I attempted to use magic more, i'd get into it.

I also love the variety of weapon effectiveness. For example, I really enjoy using the warhammer. It is VERY powerful and usually down opponents in one hit, but it also takes a very long time to swing and weighs you down a lot as you carry it around.

The last thing i'll write about is how much fun quests are. These aren't quick, 10 minute quests. During the quest where you must travel to Pale Pass for the Madstone, I never thought it would end. When I finally discovered the Madstone after about an hour, I really felt like I had accomplished something.

Overall, great game. I never thought I would get into a game like this, especially after Morrowind, which I didn't have much patience for thanks to the lack of direction. However, I can't recall, aside from any of the GTA's, being so wrapped up in a game before.

Co-sign. I remember the first time I did the last quest for the Thieves Guild. I think it took me like 3 hours lol, it was epic. I ran out of potions, my armor was low, I was scrambling looking for things that I use with alchemy to help me out. Like you said, once you finish it really really feels like an accomplishment. There's so much to do, that when you finally do get around to beating the actual storyline it feel anticlimactic almost.

Just as I was thinking about picking up a non-sports title for the 360 (very rare for me), I come across this thread!

I think I'm going to pick this one up tonight- sounds like a great change of pace from what I usually play and a game that has a real soul to it.

My only question is about the patch/expansion that I've heard about- What is it exactly? Is it free? Do you guys recommend getting it right away?

              Thanks!

I actually have not purchased the expansions, but tempted to at some point. The game is so deep with what you get from the start that I'd hold off on buying them. It's the best game released on 360 so far IMO.

I'd recommend the KotN expansion mgo. It's got some great quests, and some even better items.

I'll pick this up for the PS3 when it gets here, just to delve back into the wonderful world of Oblivion.

                      Re: Oblivion is still awesome!

So after the patch was released for the 360, did the stuttering framerate get any better?

I am lucky enough to have the ps3 and 360, so I am trying to figure out which version to get. I had rented the 360 version after it came out and loved it but never got around to buying it. I know SI was released for the 360 and not the ps3 so far but that is not a deciding factor. Everything I have read was that the ps3 version was slightly better with framerate and graphics plus it comes with KotN.

Anyone recommend one version over the other, considering I am not looking at the Shivering Isles expansion for the forseeable future?

The last news I saw was the the downloadable content was not coming for the PS3. Might change though.

Based off this thread, I borrowed this game from a co-worker. I'm not really into RPG's too much but I was intrigued after reading this thread.

                          A couple of questions:

                          1. I've heard that the 3rd person view isn't as good as the 1st person. Why is that?
                          2. Will things I do in this game affect how people talk or react to me several hours (or game days) down the road? For example, if I kill someone husband, will their wife remember me years later and act accordingling?

                          Thanks!

                            1. Combat is much easier in 1st person, you'll swing and miss quite a bit more in 3rd person.

                            2. It really depends but I believe in missions and if you have a choice then whatever you do has an effect. But if you kill just a random civilian, say a husband I don't think the wife would just be mad at you, but someone can correct me if I am wrong on that.

I just got this game, because of all of the rave reviews you guys have given it.

Having just started... I have a few questions. On my way to drop off the amulet to Jauffrey (the first quest), I ran into some trouble. Some cat-faced highwayman tried to kill and rob me. Luckily a night watch came over and saved me.

So I'm going down the road, and I see a horse. Sweet. So I jump on it. All of the sudden the night watch comes over and tries to arrest me (apparently it was his horse). I decline, and take off.

I finally get to Jauffrey's place, and give him the amulet. All of the sudden, the night watch comes out, says he's going to arrest me again. I decline, and he whips my a** to death.

Should I just go to jail? Keep on running? Or try and kill him?
