Quick question about the 360 HD DVD Drive

I finally broke down and bought the drive yesterday. Also ordered Goodfellas, The Matrix Trilogy, and King Kong off of EBay. (Got the Drive minus Kong for about 130 bucks off Ebay, not too shabby.)

    Anyhoo...quick question.

Does the 360 HD DVD Drive upconvert your standard DVDs the same way the new Upconverting units do? Just curious.

I saw a demo at Circuit City on just what Upconverting standard DVDs does and came away impressed. Big difference IMO.

Only if you are running your 360 with HDMI (Elite) or VGA

And running though VGA isn't that great... at least on my TVs. One TV was decent while the other I got a washed out color.

But now that I got the Elite, the 360 HD-DVD does a solid job of upconverting through HDMI.

You don't even have to use the HD-DVD drive to upconvert if you use HDMI or VGA, it'll do it on the regular box.

For us "non techno guys"...the VGA is the component cables with fiber optics correct?

It's a cable you can purchase made by Microsoft that has a output like what your monitor uses to plug into the PC (well, a VGA monitor)...

I have my 360 hooked to the VGA port on my HDTV, and a digital optical audio cable from the 360 to my reciever for sound.

I picked up the HD-DVD drive a couple of weeks ago (got King Kong with it, and 2 free other movies in a Circuit City deal). Got Mission Impossible 3 and Batman Begins. I really like the quality, and it's a cheap way to get the HD effects. Now I just have to subscribe to Netflix so I can rent them rather than buy way too many HD-DVD movies lol.

Slightly off topic I guess, but I have an Elite and use the VGA hookup instead of HDMI... I actually think it looks better. Both looked great obviously, but something about the VGA's color just looks incredibly crisp.

Anyway, congrats on the HD drive... movies look fantastic in HD.

I'm glad I found out too...saves me from needing a separate DVD player, I just use my 360 and it's fine...

Interesting thread. How is VGA compared to component cables? My Mits has a VGA input as well, but it is around 3 years old now. I guess it depends on what resolution the tv can do?

VGA is better IMO. Not huge but it's noticeable. I have the Samsung 5088S TV and the VGA looks incredible for the 360.
