    Sony Recall?

I apologize if this has been addressed before....

I have a first gen PS2 (launch) and read on somewhere that Sony is offering a recall on all first gen PS2 s because of the disc read error problem. For the last 3 months I ahve been getting this error on just my CD ROM based games.

I have always been under the impression that the only way Sony would repair or replace your first gen PS2, is if it was still under warranty. and you would have to pay shipping. Otherwise , it was $120 to repair. I have opened it up a few times to clean the lens and that has worked before but not anymore. I assume I am screwed since I did open it up and they are having a recall.

Has anyone else heard about this recall or can offer other suggestions?-

Never heard of a recall. I really doubt that Sony would recall a model that over 3 years old.

        Re: Sony Recall?

So I called Sony support and the guy said there was no such thing as a "recall"
He bascially proceeded to say I was getting the disc read error for two major reasons:

        1. Dust. He said I should take a vaccuum to my PS2! Serioulsy. I about laughed at the guy. I said, " I wasn't aware I was supposed to vacum my PS2.

        2. Foreign periphials such as Game Shark can ruin. I almost laguhed at this one too since there are thousands of people who use the game shark.

So, after about 5 minutes of near laughing, he recommended I use the Auto Diagnosis feature WITHOUT game in the PS2 and see if that works. Nope. nothing at all. I didn't get upset so he decided to note my account and he gave me a number so when I send in my PS2, I won't have to pay for the repairs. Which was cool.

My only worry is that since I have already opened my PS2 to try and clean it, they will notice that and won't fix it for free. Anyone else have this same situation?

Well you can play dumb and say well, the tech said I needed to vacuum the PS2 and I opened it up and did just that?

I have heard of some people being able to send their PS2 in for repairs and Sony replace them for no charge. Not every case they do this, but the vast majority they have. They refused to announce an official recall, they are just taking them one by one, on a call by call basis.

That's what I thought when I hear this rumored "recall" That would be a PR nightmare. I'm not sure if I should take the risk of sending it in still.

Actually you are. I bought my PS2 about a year and a half ago, and it came with a small piece of paper that said you should vaccume the vents.
