    Prototype (360/PS3)

    Radical unveils Prototype

Latest issue of Game Informer takes wraps off of studio's new hyperviolent free-roaming action game coming to 360, PS3 in 2008.

In 2005, Radical Entertainment gave Big Green his due in The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. The well-received Grand Theft Auto-esque open-world action game dropped players into the raging green giant's shoes (if he wore any) and turned them loose to sate their appetite for destruction.

Taking the free-roaming destruction concept to its logical next step, Radical revealed its next project in the August edition of Game Informer. Titled Prototype, Radical's newest is a hyperviolent action game that follows the exploits of Alex Mercer, who has acquired superhuman abilities as the result of a science experiment gone awry.

Radical's unique twist on the Grand Theft Auto style of play is that as Mercer kills people, he absorbs their memories, abilities, and appearance. As a result, players gain the ability to shapeshift into any one they've absorbed, and they also gain knowledge and skills. Absorbing dead foes and innocent bystanders alike also augments Mercer's biomass, making him stronger and giving him the ability to morph his body into a weapon or harden his skin in defense.

Prototype will use Radical's proprietary fourth-generation Titanium game engine. The game takes place in Manhattan, and depending on whether players employ brute force or stealth tactics in the game, the city either acts as a labyrinthine maze or becomes a decimated warzone.

Prototype will also feature online two-player co-op, where players each use their own version of Mercer. In online games, players will be able to tag-team to use special moves and powers.

According to Game Informer, Prototype will take to the streets in 2008 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, the ever-astute retail radar spotted a GameStop product page for a PC version. Radical had not returned a request for comment as of press time. The game has not yet been rated, though given the subject matter, an M for Mature seems all but assured.

I love the look of the game. Let's see how it looks when they get it running on a 360/PS3.

                Re: Prototype (360/PS3)

There's something undeniably cool about being a guy with super powers. With the success of Microsoft's brilliant Crackdown, gamers are definitely ready for another open-world adventure and Prototype looks just the ticket. Due next year from Sierra Entertainment and Radical Entertainment, Prototype is the spiritual successor to Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, and while the angry green guy is nowhere to be seen, the anti-hero is just as devastating.

You play as a genetically engineered human who's capable of super human abilities. The game is currently far from complete, but it's already clear that action is high on the agenda. It seems that a relentless pace has been a key idea in the game's design, and that boils down to the most simple of gameplay mechanics: movement.

Sure, moving around has never really been a huge problem, but how often have you wandered into a car, hit a lamp post or generally hoped your movement was a little smoother? In Prototype the designers have taken Free Running (or Parkour) as inspiration, which in turn means that your character automatically moves and reacts to the environment. This Locomotion system comes into its own when you're running, making your character leap over vehicles and obstacles as they get in your way. It seems incredibly natural and something that should come into its own on busy streets.

And the streets can certainly be busy. Being a next-gen title we no longer have to put up with a few cars here and there, and pedestrian numbers are well up on what previous consoles have been capable of. These two factors give this virtual Manhattan a real sense of life, in a similar way to Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed. With a year of work still to be done, the already impressive visuals can only get better.

Story elements are thin on the ground at the moment, but during the Games Convention demo it was clear where the main enemy threat will come from. As to be expected when there's a mutant on the loose, the army has been brought in to take you out. Even in the game's early state, the army can be seen on foot, in tanks and in attack helicopters, making for a game that has fire coming from all directions. And yes, you can hijack those helicopters and turn their powerful weapons on your enemies.

Next up are the infected creatures, that are intent on hunting you down and pursuing you through the city streets. As they follow you they plough through cars, sending them flying and creating scenes that wouldn't look out of place in the biggest Hollywood blockbusters. These three-way battles create some insane fire-fights and brawls that have to be seen to be believed, with hell breaking loose on the city streets.

Being a mutant surely means you can do more than leap over cars though, right? Your key ability is shape shifting, either to create new weapons, to defend yourself or to take on the abilities of other characters. Your main weapon appears to be a set of claws, capable of inflicting much damage, but the demo also saw a set of spikes and a defensive shield that enables you to crash through vehicles on the road. Many more abilities will be included in the final game, and hopefully they'll be as fun to use as the initial few that were demoed.

Your final and perhaps most powerful ability is consuming other characters and taking on their appearance and abilities. How much depth there is to this remains to be seen, but early impressions bode very well. The demoed mission showed the kind of use this ability will have in the final game. The goal was to take down a military base, with the how being entirely down to you. By consuming a military commander the main character was suddenly able to wander around unnoticed and use military force. In a rather cheeky move, our demo player called in an air strike in to take out the base and the mission was complete.

It's perhaps a little easy to get carried away with a game when all you've been shown is a small sample of thrilling gameplay, but Prototype already looks like being one of the most exciting games due out next year. Built on Radical Entertainment's fifth version of their Titanium engine the game looks superb, and with the promise of full online two-player co-op throughout the entire campaign the year-long wait until release is going to be hard to take.

                  Re: Prototype (360/PS3)

                  Genre: Open World Action
                  Publisher: Sierra
                  Developer: Radical
                  Release Date: Q3 2008
Prototype is the Miracleman of open-world superhero games.

That's a relatively obscure reference, which you'll probably only get if you're really into comic books. I'll explain. In brief, Miracleman is one of the seminal works of the superhero genre, although a combination of its small independent publisher and a long-running debate over the rights to the series have kept it under most fans' radar. It was written by Alan Moore in the early '80s, and concerned a man who suddenly discovered he could transform into a nearly invincible version of himself: Miracleman. The "point" of Miracleman was that once a human gains an extraordinary amount of power, it would logically follow that he would have a hard time holding onto his basic humanity.

Moore's run on the series culminated in one of the bloodiest fights ever seen in comic-book history, as Miracleman and his archnemesis fought each other across the face of London. As you expect to see with superhero fights, there was an extraordinary amount of property damage; as you don't expect to see, there was also a lot of death amidst the destruction. Miracleman threw occupied cars at his enemy; they blew up crowded streets; they killed dozens, if not hundreds, of people while trying to kill each other. It was one of the bloodiest, most shocking issues in comic history.
At its most hyperkinetic, Prototype recalls that kind of imagery. Radical Entertainment, the developers of games like Scarface and Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, describe it as "the ultimate power fantasy," with you put in control of an amazingly powerful, nearly unstoppable monster, then cut loose on the streets of a New York that's under martial law.
Alex Mercer wakes up one day in New York City as a viral epidemic is sweeping across Manhattan. The infected are physically changed, going from ordinary humans into clawed, armored monsters. As a result, parts of the city are put under military quarantine, while others turn into virtual no-man's-lands. As time goes on, the city becomes a battlefield between the infected, the military, and Alex, who counts as a third faction all by himself. Your goal is to stay alive, and if you feel like it, to track down some answers about who you are.
Alex, incidentally, is basically a monster in human form. You can shapeshift, assuming various forms for attack or defense; you can grow claws, sprout armor, block gunfire with a chitinous shield, pick up cars, rip things apart with your bare hands, and more. Alex moves through the city like a parkour runner on PCP, bouncing across traffic, running up buildings, ricocheting off walls, and leaving chaos in his wake.
More disturbingly, Alex can also bodily consume any human being he gets his hands on. At will, you can grab any passerby, whether they're a soldier or a civilian, and slap on some kind of deeply violent finishing move — crushing the head, tearing out throats, beating them to death with a few quick punches — before liquifying and devouring the entire body. Alex then learns everything that person knew, and can shapeshift into their form.
You do not even have the ability to try and be a nice person in this game. You are a monster. You are Godzilla in a hoodie, and you are here to wreck things.
This allows you to play the game in a couple of different ways. Devouring people allows you to get further into the mystery of Alex's origins, as they can't lie to you when you've eaten their spicy brains (there are about 250 steps on the road to discovering who Alex really is), and also allows you to play things sneakily. You can disguise yourself as **** near anyone, such as military commanders or police sergeants. In the latter cases, this also lets you give people orders.
Alternatively, you could go on homicidal rampages. The military is out to kill you, and the infected are out to kill everyone. The end result is that Prototype can turn into an intensely violent game at a moment's notice, above and beyond what's usually possible in open-world games. You can seize military hardware and blow up entire city blocks; the infected are superhumanly fast and strong; and ordinary people caught between the two of you have the lifespan of a snowball in a cyclotron. They just fly apart.
The big fight scenes are where Prototype really comes alive, where you're fighting the military and the infected all at once. Before then, it's difficult to appreciate what Radical's done; on the surface, they've made an open-world game with the player as the biggest possible son of a bitch in gaming history. This is not unusual or noteworthy. It's only when the onscreen action really starts to heat up that the game becomes impressive. Prototype can turn into the world's goriest disaster movie at a moment's notice, and you're there in the middle of it throwing cars and making noise.
At this point, Prototype is about 20 percent done and is slated for release next year. The developer knows the genre it's working in, and Radical is finally doing its own thing after years of making licensed titles. This could be one of the big titles in 2008.
