Peter Moore Taking EA into REALITY

Was in my mailbox today and saw this funny article about what Peter Moore is trying to do with EA. Game Informer Article where Peter is targeting Nike & ESPN.

One of his more ambitious ideas is taking the EA Sports brand and using it to develop a sports news and social networking site to compete head-to-head with ESPN.
“There is a great opportunity to take EA Sports and turn it into a general sports brand that can compete not only with Take-Two and Konami and the other usual suspects in the videogame world…[but also] to look at ourselves in a different way and compete with the likes of Nike and ESPN to win the hearts and minds of a very desirable demographic group, which is the 14-to-34-year-old male worldwide,” Moore told the reporter.
“It may sound like heresy, but I’m not here to just sell more Maddens and more FIFAs,” he said. “Protecting our base is very important, but I didn’t come here to just maintain the status quo and build the business 5 to 7 percent a year.”
Moore sees the PC as a stronger platform for his plans, at least for the time being. In the interview, he talks about EA Sports GameShow, an advertisement supported multiplayer trivia game that is set to hit PCs this fall. Players will answer sports questions live, presented through text, audio and video clues. Player stats will be tracked, and users will be able to create their own in-game avatars. If it succeeds, he isn’t ruling out the possibility that it could show up on the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 eventually.
You know what is the funniest thing that I like from this whole article in being a fan of 2K? ESPN jumped ship thinking that 2K was dead in the water when in fact 2k has done so much better without ESPN. Their presentations have been of the chain and they've been improving every game in their sports division over the previous years across the boards. Not sure how EA is doing on their front, but I know the basketball title reallly shows a bit of the quality to me. Any thoughts on this.......??

Would be funny if EA turns out to go solid head-to-head with ESPN. Thought they had a contract to prevent ideas like this?

this is funny, since EA has basically been using ESPN's airtime to gain exposure. EA is all over ESPN around madden time, but ESPN is tucked away in the games, relegated to tickers and streaming radio.

That's another thing that cracks me up. They bought this expensive license that wasn't even needed seriously. They don't utilize it in any of their games to its full potential. Didn't they sign a 15-year contract or something like that? Weird how they have all this potential and aren't even near the midnset of using it properly? The score updates are in 2K games when you get online and probably other sports games. ESPN seriously is a overrated name. I wonder how ESPN is taking this news? I wonder if there was something that brought this about that probably won't hit the surface for consumers to laugh at?

EA getting the ESPN license was the most worthless acquisition ever. They barely use it. It makes me sick to think that we could have INCREDIBLE ESPN presentation for 2K8 games while EA pisses it away with stupid video clips of PTI and a ticker. No escuses for that -- they just bought it because the super-authentic ESPN presentation was one of 2K's main strong points... I don't think they ever had an intention of really utilizing the ESPN license in a meaningful way. It's been 3 years and we get Sal Masakela in skate. and Tony Kornheiser's stupid PTI video clips? Thanks EA, ya jerks.

I have a better idea for him...Fix the EA sports games first by starting off with Madden or maybe give us patches when we need them.

That's the thing about EA. This makes the NFL acquisition seem even more like a dismemberment on EA's part to buy out the competition by getting exclusive rights to the money maker. Only the fanboys rejoice year after year. This has been incredibly awful how they haven't found a way to add anything productive with that license. Do they even use it in a ticker or anything? I mean, it's worthless. No excuse for the overrated ESPN jumping in the car with EA either because they saw how good it was getting. There was nothingon the horizon in EA's resume` that would give any type of hint of equal immersion or better utilization of the product and licensing as compared to what was done within their previous license.

I think ESPN & EA did it because of the football tie they'd have together. Why it isn't pasted on at least one replay, one billboard in the stadiums, or spoken one time anywhere to make the game more immersive is beyond any type of logical comprehension. But that's what both of them get. Like two dummies feeling that they are meant to be together when they aren't even utilizing their full potential to bring about any type of game. I'm very curious to see what Peter Moore bring about to back up this back stab. Man, this makes me even more upset about the freaking exclusive licenses all over the place in sports.
