    SNES vs Genesis

Im thinking of rebuilding my 16 bit collection and I'm looking for some great old school games to play. I owned a Genesis but became a sports fanatic when the second game I purchased was EA's Tony Larusa. From that day on, non-sports games took a back seat. Soon, dozens of those white EA boxes dominated my library. Of course, this all means I passed on so many great non-sports titles, I've completely missed out.

My best friend owned a SNES and while he wasn't as much of a sports junkie as I was, his taste in games was crap. He had this thing for games with super bright colors, simplistic controls, 1st party Nintendo characters, licensed games and games that were already at the arcade. You know, anything Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid, NBA Jam, Street Fighter......so once again, I missed out on some great hidden gems for the system.

Anyway, we'd often argue about which system was better. From the number of colors(Sega Genesis was a dull colored console) to the controllers to the game library. It was pretty much agreed on that the Genesis handled sports gaming pretty well while the SNES was the console that offered great 1st party games. In fact, if you look at any "Top XX" list for the SNES, I bet the majorty of games are 1st party games.

As of now, I need some great underground games and cult classics for ethier system that you guys can remember. I'm feeling nostalgic today.

I would recommend any number of RPG's that were on the SNES, but doesn't sound like you'd enjoy any of them.

Actually I'm real interested in those SNES RPGs. I remember playing Secret of Mana with my friend but never got into back in the day. Same with Chrono Trigger. Those 2 are on the top of my list as far as RPGs go. I heard some things about Earthbound as well I want to check out.

I used to love that Batman and Robin game. Someone let me borrow it once and I got deep into it and they started begging for it back. Thats the one where you had to fight all the different Batman nemisis' on each level. I loved that one. It had the style and animation of the updated cartoon series.

Good looking out on Jungle Strike. Back in my EA nut-huggin' days, that and Urban Strike were dat ish!

            Well then...

Chrono Trigger is probably the best of the bunch, I still play through it every couple of years or so.

            Secret of Mana was fun.

Seiken Densetsu III, sequel to Secret of Mana and quite good. Never released in the US, there is an English translation out there.

All of the Final Fantasy's are quality (maybe not Mystic Quest so much).

Breath of Fire games are worth checking out, I didn't enjoy them as much as Chrono Trigger or the FF games.

Soul Blazer is very good but I never got into it, prequel to Illusion of Gaia I believe.

Illusion of Gaia is interesting, it's an action RPG like Secret of Mana.

            Actraiser was good.

Ogre Battle, if you're into tactics games.

And lets not forget about Desert Strike.

I remember those Urban Strike missions. Flying around securing the President's limo and other government buildings. Jungle Strike was all about taking out drug dealers. Very awesome games.
