What is difference between Solo and Campaign in Halo 3?

O.K. I know this question may sound dumb to you guys. Thing is I am extremely new to this game and have never played Halo 1 or 2 besides a couple times with friends when they need someone to play.

So I bought the game on Thursday and have a question. What is the difference between the Solo play and the Campaign play? I know in Campaign you can have mulitiplayer Campaign. At first when I went into Campaign mode I thought it was an online mode because it said Connection: Local and I didn't exactly know what that meant. So I let the game load and it takes me to actual gameplay. So I'm like o.k. the Campaign must be different from Solo.

When I first got the game I started on the Solo play and it was pretty fun. Then yesterday I was just experimenting the game and seeing what else I could do and saw Campaign mode. So I got into the game and I have just recovered Cortana and just got off the plane and am going into battle once again. I am figuring I have almost beat Campaign because it seems as though on this mission I have to save the Earth. BTW I am playing on Easy.

So what exactly is the difference between the two?
