Halo 3 - To wait or not to wait?

I have not beaten Halo, and I don't even have Halo 2. Do you recommend buying Halo 3 regardless, without knowing the story? I want to buy it because I found it for $46 shipped, but I'm wondering if I should play through Halo and Halo 2 before I open/buy it.

    Suggestions?

If you play online and you like fast-moving competitive games, then yes. If you are just offline I don't know. Personally I could care less about the story behind Halo, the on-line experience is my favorite by a wide margin when compared to any other game out there.

    On-line: YES!
Off-line: I would lean towards no. Rent it.

There's very little real story in halo, it's all non-stop beat-***. That's not to say the story isn't good, it's just not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

You will be sorta confused if you play 3 without playing through the other two, but the Halo 3 manual gives you enough backstory with the intro and character bios to let you know what's going on.

If you buy either of the two vresions of Halo that have extras then you can get filled into the story very easily.

Well, is it worth playing Halo and Halo 2 to learn the story, or should I just read the story online and Play Halo 3?

It's not worth playing 1 and 2 for the story. I'd just go right to Halo3.

Do what I did when Halo 2 came out. Just play the multiplayer for Halo 3 and start on the single player mode for Halo 1, then play Halo 2, then Halo 3. The story for Halo 1 is much better than 2 IMO.

If you're playing single player, it's not that big of a deal. There's no major plot twists or anything that occur. That said, the first is probably the best game, so I'd definitely play it.

The whole 'Halo' story sucks, IMO...and if you are that concerned just read the 1up.com review by Dan Hsu and click the relevant link to get up to speed before starting the 'Halo 3' campaign.

I know some folks on here think that the Halo mythos is on par with other major sci-fi franchises and that what I said is blasphemy, but the generic humans vs. aliens w/ super soldiers crap gets old.

Buy the game for the multiplayer, it'll last a few years. Be comforted by that fact alone.

Ok so I'm not the only one that wanted to stab my eardrums with toothpicks when I heard die-hard fans talking about how they can't wait to find out what happens to Master Chief in the Halo 3 story?

The story isn't all that special. The only reason why it's their really is to give a reason to blow stuff up.

That story primer isn't going to help that much. You will be lost if you haven't played the other games. As for the story itself, I don't think Bungie has done the best job they could have telling this story in the games, but I think it's a damn good one, if you throw in the books.

I'd say its worth playin the first two before the third because its mad fun. You might love the story or not, but it'll still be a lot of fun.

since halo 1 and 2 are fairly cheap.. it's worth playing through and seeing the subtle and not so subtle difference between all 3 games. Plus you'll get used to how the game controls since it feels slightly different than other shooters (to me at least).

I don't think the story line of the Halo franchise is bad, but it's not "The Greatest Shooter Story Ever Told."

My thoughts exactly. I think the Halo story is very good, but Bungie is not very good at telling that story in the game. I'm a big Halo fan and have beaten the previous 2 games many times and on my first play through of each one I have always been pretty lost in regards to what was actually happening and why I had to do certain things. It does clear up on around your 3rd playthrough, but that is a sign of very poor story telling.

Going into Halo 3, I was all polished up on Halo history and what was at stake and I STILL was pretty lost in the single-player game throughout. Things just aren't very clear and they are not explained to you. I'm now playing through the single-player a second time (on Legendary) and even put on the subtitles to make sure I get all that info.
