I don't know about that. Vice City was just fine in my book and improved upon the things I disliked in GTA3.
Of course I think your exact same thoughts about Tony Hawk and how those sequels are popping up faster each time. Yet it is adored by many so I am in the minority.

What I have heard :
The next GTA, which will still not be considered a true sequel to GTA 3, will be released sometime within the next 18 months. It will be much like Vice City as far as being considered more an addition or expansion rather than a brand new game. It will also be the last GTA released on the current generation of consoles, as well as the last version that will use the GTA 3 engine.
They also supposedly have a team of 5 people currently beginning work on GTA 4, which obviously WILL be the true sequel to GTA 3 and will be released shortly after the next gen consoles launch (could possibly still be a PS3 exclusive).
I think gaming age was where I saw this information.Comment
