    Online Gaming

    Hey guys.

I just wanted to get some of your thoughts on playing online. It seems over the past few years online gaming has become more and more popular with more and more games offering it. New games even get marked down if they don't have an online component. However I have never really considered online play a necessity. Even now with my PS3 I have only played online once (COD 3). I found it pretty good but not really something that would have me buying a game just for that type of experience.

With the games that I have already (NBA 2k7, COD 3, Rainbow Six) and the games I'll probly be getting soon (COD 4 for one!) I was thinking of giving online play a real crack.

I was also wondering if you can get your gaming fix with a quick 30 min to an hour of a good online multi-player game, or does it have to be setup, planned etc.

I've even considered buying Warhawk (as I can tell I'll love the game) but am afraid of not finding the time to play it properly.

So I guess I am just asking you what you get out of online play (mainly console, and preferably PS3). Hopefully you can convince me to start pwning some n00bs.

    Thanks

P.S. I am not new to games as I have been playing them since as long as I remember and follow the gaming scene in general. It's just that I haven't been able to embrace online gaming yet.

Shooters yes. Sports Games, in particular NBA 2k8 no. Due to flaws in the game, and the many people online that exploit them, if you want to have a decent game you have coordinate with someone you know plays your style.

      Re: Online Gaming

90% of my gaming is online. No matter how dumb, nothing compares to a human opponent. COD 4 and Halo 3 take about a minute to get into a game and start firing away.

However, the quickest way to ruin a sports game is to play randoms online. Only play non cheesers. But after you play COD 4 and such online, you may not want to play sports games as much. I play less and less sports games as times go by because the shooter games are so excellent.

I only really play stuff like racing games and shooters online. I kind of refuse to go online and play games against one person, due to those usually being the games people ruin the fun for.

Last game I played on XBOX Live was...473 days ago

          Maybe I should change that.

I'm in agreement with the majority here. Shooters can be a blast. I love playing Halo 3 online. With a game like Halo 3 it almost seems like the single player campaign is an afterthought. This is the opposite of many games in the past where a poorly thought out multi-player component was added to what was meant to be a single player game. In a game like Halo 3 it works great. However, I think if you take a game like Bioshock..if they would have added some sort of multi-player component to that it may have taken away from development of the single player mode, and that wouldn't have been good.

One of my other favorite games to play online is the Xbox Live Arcade game Catan. This is a strategy board game for 3-4 players and is really fun to play online. It's a change of pace from the fast paced stuff and I really enjoy it. People that are playing this game tend to be more mature adults, so you don't have to deal with a lot of the crap you might find on other games as far as foul language and rude behavior are concerned. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find a game..particularly late at night when I'm usually playing. Not too many people want to play a good board game online when they can be shooting each other up in Halo 3 I guess.

Like most of you I stay away from sports games online for the most part. There was only so many thrashings I could take on Madden over the years to where I realized I just can't keep up. Still though, if you know somebody that is at your level and doesn't use cheats or exploits sports games can be great fun too.

Kobe, for you specifacally, you live in Austraila, so unless your playing games with fellow Aussies or Kiwi's, the connection may not be the best. Just something to think about.
