I was really psyched about this game when I first read the interview and saw the gameplay vids, but I have to admit that I'm really disappointed at these retro additions. Blanka? Zangief? Come on. It looks so freaking old. The artwork in Alpha and SFIII is so superior that these characters look dated next to Yun or Elena, where the designs actually make sense. Also, the colors are just so primary right now. It looks like the saturday morning cartoon version of Street Fighter. I know the game has always been colorful, but SFIII had a palette. I realize I'm filling this thread with art nerd crap at this point, but let's just say I hope this game has a lot of characters, because Guile is the only one I'm glad to see from the forgotten fighters of the World Warriors.

This is 2008, so there really should be as many, or near as many characters as Alpha 3, especially since we are only one character out of the rehash dept. at this point.

Just so I don't sound too negative, I am excited about it, I love the graphics and the "sculpting" of the art. My pain at seeing the silly old characters is balanced by the fact that I like the way they look, and I think the facial expressions are going to work really well with SF gameplay.

I think you might be looking at this from too much of a "hardcore" SF fan perspective. I don't think many people know about most of those characters in SFIII and the various iterations afterwards. And I would say in many fighting games, more characters doesn't equal a better game; in other words, just because you can add more characters on a disc doesn't make it the right thing to do.

I think there certainly will be new characters, but people know the characters from SFII and so it's an easy way to reach the casual and hardcore at once by bringing them back.

The art direction is personal preference. I happen to like it, but I see both sides to the argument.

I know way too little about this game to even complain. The only thing I really didnt like were the animations. Reminded me too much of the EX series. Still the game is crazy early, Ive only seen 1 new character, so lets just cool out and wait until we get some really concrete details. I hope Capcom doesn't uff this 1 up.

Yeah, i dunno...I'm not feeling the animation style, I mean Chun-Li has arms the same as Ryu...I can see why a lot like it (and in past SF games they've gone this route), I just prefer something a bit more realistic. We'll see what it's like when the game's out tho.

Just as we were packing up our bags in preparation for our trip tomorrow to Tokyo's outskirts for a playable sampling of Street Fighter IV, word hit that Capcom has announced a new character for the game.

The new World Warrior is Abel. Described as "a man without a past," Abel has gathered what little clues he can as he searches for remaining members of Shadoloo. As his tag line suggests, he has a terrible case of amnesia.

Check out our media section for a look at Abel, both through artwork and in-game shots.

All the characters announced so far, including the original SFII cast and newcomers Crimson Viper and Abel, will be playable in the game's demo build this Saturday at the AOU Amusement Expo. We'll be attending the event's press day on Friday (Thursday night in America) and will deliver a full report!

The artwork in this game is phenomenal. This just became a must-buy for me after seeing THAT.

Still wish some of the characters weren't so oversized and Ryu wasn't so Americanized.
