Well my heart is broken. It looks like those four stupid characters are it: SNK character, fat dude, Mexican and the MMA character who just looks like an extra from a bad Van Damme movie, rather than anything resembling any of the cool people from MMA. I don't know why Capcom avoided all of the characters that actually look and play like martial artists, but it looks like I'll just be using Ken and Chun Li this time around.

Hopefully Soul Caliber 4 is great, and I can forget about this polygonal pimple on the *** of Street Fighter's legacy.

I guess the SNK character you're refering to is C.Viper?

Yeah, but the fat dude looks like an SNK character too. It's very hard to take when Street Fighter has so many characters I like, and none of them are in the game. Ken, Ryu, Chun Li and a version of Guile are in every game, so that doesn't count.

They talk about putting Sheng Long in the game, more characters in the home version, and more female characters overall in this interview. I feel a little bit better after 1up addressed some of the issues I was having. The gameplay looks enticing, but it'd be really frustrating for me if this was just 3D SF2. From the sounds of this interview, they have some secrets up their sleeve and are aware of that danger.

Yeah, that video was awesome. Hearing the renditions of their respective stage music was sweet.

Plus, the Ryu voice sounded like Ichigo's which is doubly awesome.

Street Fighter IV Producer Interview

1UP: How about the new characters for the console version? Have you figured them all out yet?

YO: As you know, we allowed people to vote on which character they most wanted to see in the console version, and Cammy won, so she's definitely in the game. We have a rough version of her already up and running. Akuma came in second or third, and we've already included him in the arcade game. Figuring out the right number of characters is a lot like chess. You need to know the rules well, and things need to be balanced properly. We'll see what we ultimately end up with.

1UP: When you guys first announced the game, there was quite a bit of negativity in the community about the game's art style. I mean, people were really harsh on the game for months. How did you deal with that and remain confident through it all?

YO: To be honest, the team did get a bit worried when all of that criticism started appearing on the Web. Here's the thing, though -- we didn't just come up with the game and present it out of nowhere. We had well over two years of planning before we actually showed it publicly. I reminded the team that we had researched and planned things for so long, and that we just had to remain confident in what we came up with.

1UP: You know, we even heard a lot of criticism over the EGM cover we did [Points to the artwork on the wall, the same piece of Ryu art that was on the cover]. People freaked the f*** out because Ryu's head was so small compared to the rest of his body.

YO: Ha! Well, when we first set out to create the game, we kind of tried to imagine what 21st-century Street Fighter characters would look like. We pictured them as pretty buff. But, again, we had to remain confident in our vision. Look, a lot of us on the team have been creating games for over 15 years, so we know what we're doing.

1UP: What was the thinking behind Rufus, by the way? A lot of people say he looks pretty out of place -- which is kind of ironic, given that they're talking about a game that also has a crazy green dude with orange hair.

YO: We had some other candidates, but we ultimately decided on Rufus because we figured everyone would talk about him and he'd freak some people out. But like you said, we introduced Blanka back in the day, so we've done this sort of thing in the past. You need to include some characters that are a bit freaky. By next year, people won't even question his inclusion. Look, if people are just looking for really cool-looking but ultimately bland characters, they can go play Tekken or Virtua Fighter, but people like Street Fighter because of its over-the-top characters, and Rufus fits our roster well.

1UP: So who do you think is going to be the favorite new character?

YO: Abel.

1UP: How about Sheng Long? [Capcom has hinted that the famous EGM April Fools' joke character is actually in the game --Ed.]

YO: Are you coming to the Tokyo Game Show? How about you ask me that question again then. [Smiles]

Nah, it looks nuts in person. There are some awkward artistic moments in the design, but seeing it live is crazy. Everyone at the San Diego con was really impressed, and there was a huge line to play. Even people who weren't into Street Fighter had to look. The speed of it is very impressive.
