    Re: Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm

This game sounds like it could be a solid showing. I'm not sure it'll catch on. I definitely need to watch the Deadliest Catch. I hear so much about the show but I can never find the time. If they do succeed, maybe they'll bring inspiration to Cabela in making that game more realistic. Here's to hoping that the words translate into entertainment with this.

      Team Xbox: Hands-On Preview

So it’s not surprising that the video game version currently in development by Liquid Dragon Studios and slated for release in late May by publisher Greenwave holds a similar interest for fans of the show. Or maybe it is surprising. We all know games based on movies are usually terrible, and ones based on TV shows even worse. But after getting some hands on time and a demo conducted by one of the stars of the show, Josh Harris of the Cornelia Marie – serious, he’s been helping in the development as have other members of the fleet like the lovably crusty captain of the Northwestern, Sig Hansen – we gotta say, we’re intrigued. This is not your everyday budget title rushed out the door to capitalize on a popular property. Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm is actually a fairly deep simulation of the commercial crab fishing experience complete with cool minigames and support for multiplayer over Xbox Live. So what if you constantly get pwned in CoD4, can you catch more crab than your online rivals?
With a few exceptions all the people, including deck hands, provided their own voices, and a lot of research was done on the individual boats as well as Dutch Harbor to recreate everything to a “T”. They even got the official cooperation of the U.S. Coast Guard to include realistic models of the cutters that prowl those waters protecting the fisherman.
The game is definitely a sim, requiring you to drive the lumbering ships as you would in real life, using realistic rudder and engine controls. The interior of the bridges all look exactly like the real boats from the show and feature equipment that you’ll have to master. Namely the plotting device, which is essentially a GPS computer where you mark off where you’ll be laying your crab pots, but there’s also a radio for calling in distress calls and giving competing crabbers BS info on where the crab are running. You’ll get to customize your own ship as well, inside and out.
There’s also a lot of deep strategy elements to the game. You are the captain of a ship after all, with a crew to look after and a boat to maintain. You’ll recruit and hire deckhands, load your boat with fuel, bait and pots and then try and pick the best places to fish for the delicious bottom feeders. The members of your crew are good at different things – engineering, cooking, etc. – so putting together a good crew is like building a good party in an RPG. You have to keep their health and morale up if you want to catch some serious crab and make some serious money.
Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm may be a little niche for some people, but it’s definitely not just another budget title exploiting a popular TV show. Some serious effort has gone into the development along with a lot of cooperation from the cast and production company behind the show. It may be a little too out there for the average gamer, but I predict a sleeper hit amongst fans of the show and gamers who like some depth to their games when it releases in late May of this year.

There's only one thing missing that would make this game better, Mike Rowe.

Seriously, as of now this doesn't look horrible...I'm still hesitant, but I might enjoy this for a rent (or buy if it's cheaper).

may give it a gamefly rental, and the achievements look easy enough.

Has anyone here tried this game yet? It's actually getting fairly good user reviews so far. The general consensus is that the graphics aren't great, it has a few glitches, but has some interesting sim/strategy elements to it. It definitely isn't for the FPS crowd but it sounds like it does a pretty good job in its niche.

I used to work on a king crab boat in the Bering Sea myself (and now enjoy reliving the past from the comfort of my living room watching The Deadliest Catch on TV) so I may give this a rent from Gamefly.

It was #3 on my gamefly list behind grid and ninja gaiden, and they skipped over it to give me something further down my list.

I wish they'd put out a pc/360 demo. I'm interested, but not enough to blind buy or rent.

I already saw a used copy of it at Gamestop today, but they probably always get copies of games returned within the first few days. The guy working said the person traded it in and seemed to dislike it enough that he took cash instead of store credit for it.

I got a chance to play this game for a bit the other day.

                                IT BLOWS!!

I'm a big fan of the show, but this game is boring and tedious. It takes like 30 mins to set a string of pots, and then another 30 to retrieve them. No exaggeration there. And really besides that, there's not much else to do. The game has terrible framerate issues and stutters like a nervous Mel Tillis.

Don't even rent this game, this might be the worst game released ever for the Xbox 360.
