    Battlestations: Pacific

    Battlestations: Pacific Announced - Screens

The game features a massive U.S. and Japanese single player campaign that offers a unique blend of action and strategy. Players must plan their moves carefully on huge open-world arenas and fight in the air, above sea and underwater to relive some of the most hard-fought battles in WWII history. With the newly added Japanese faction, players will also gain insight into what could have been, should Japan have gained the upper hand against the United States. Battlestations: Pacific also features five new innovative multiplayer modes to strategically plan and battle against friends with all new maps and units.

Set in WWII, Battlestations: Pacific delivers intense, action-packed combat and strategic warfare at an extraordinary scale and features two distinctly different single player campaigns. As the Americans, the game picks up the story where Battlestations: Midway left off and allows players to fight their way from The Battle of Midway to Okinawa as they try to secure peace in the Pacific. As the Japanese however, players take control of the Imperial Japanese fleet and have the unique chance to fight at Pearl Harbor before attempting to change the course of history and take full control of the Pacific Ocean.

"Eidos is excited to bring an even bigger, more innovative and authentic experience with Battlestations: Pacific," said Robert A. Lindsey, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Eidos Inc. "With an all new Japanese faction to explore and fight with, newly expanded multiplayer content, and a slew of new air, sea, and land units, the game takes the Battlestations series to the next level, bringing a completely different perspective to the war over the Pacific."

The U.S. and Japanese single player campaigns in Battlestations: Pacific feature over 28 story missions, doubling the size of the previous Battlestations: Midway, and 21 new units, including kamikaze and other WWII jets and units. Players can now discover another viewpoint of the war by taking direct control of the infamous Ohka and other Japanese air units that fought over the Pacific Ocean during WWII.

For the first time, the game also includes the tactical landing of troops in battle. Launch your parachute squadrons with pin-point accuracy or ensure the safe passage of your landing craft and watch your battalions of troops capture key locations, man the defensive artillery and gain a strategic foothold to support your offensive efforts.

Battlestations: Pacific features all-new online multiplayer modes where players can actively engage in battles and skirmishes against friends online, and via System Link. With a plethora of new maps, units, and options to explore, Battlestations: Pacific delivers the most exciting, authentic and fun Battlestations experience yet.

Battlestations: Pacific will be available on Xbox 360 and PC.

yeah Midway was a badass game.

The strategy involved was pretty tense.

I remember some very intense, very memorable, very long (sometimes an hour plus) games that were just insane

Sweet! I never tire of WWII games, and I enjoyed Midway, so looking forward to this. I like the Japanese being spoken in that vid.

                  TeamXbox E3 2008: Battlestations: Pacific Hands-on

Lots of people have a pet game or two; something that they really like but feel was underappreciated by most other people. For me, one of those games is 2007’s Battlestations: Midway, a unique blend of action and strategy set in the pacific theater of World War II. To me, it was the perfect evolution from the old school turn-based war games, and exactly the shot in the arm that WWII themed games needed. Not everyone agreed.

But maybe the new Battlestations: Pacific will start turning that around. The first thing that might get people excited is the new look of the game, a highly-polished an realistic graphical engine that takes more advantage of the Xbox 360 hardware. Midway looked more like an Xbox 1.5 game, which isn’t surprising since it started out on that console before long delays found it on the Xbox 360. Pacific looks like an Xbox 360 game should.

The content of the game is far more expansive than before too. Battlestations: Pacific features two complete campaigns – one from the allied side that picks up where Midway left off, and one from the Japanese side that follows a “what might have happened” scenario. The turning point is the battle of the Coral Sea, and the Japanese campaign takes off from there, visiting fictional battles at Port Moresby, the Java Sea and beyond. They’re on the offensive instead of being on their heels, fighting tooth and nail on each island between there and the Japanese mainland for the rest of the war. Which is what really happened, and what will happen in the American campaign, all the way to the battle for Okinawa.

A couple of things needed to be added to the game to make it a more authentic engine for telling that story. For one, you have ground troops now. You don’t pop in and control them directly the same way you can with your airplanes and fleet of ships, but landing them on a beach head will allow them to take control over an island, giving you access to your own airfield and coastal defenses. Those you can use yourself which is pretty cool.

The other historically significant weapon brought into play is the kamikaze. These suicide bombers were a last ditch effort by the Japanese to defend their mainland from the encroaching allies, so it only makes sense for them to be in the game.

There are over one hundred different specific unit types in the game, including twenty-one new ones including F-4 Corsairs and the night-fighting Nakajima J1N1 Gekko. Planes have received some upgrades too, including an all new in-cockpit view and a target lock camera that’s great for watching your air-launched torpedoes slam into the side of an enemy destroyer.

Realism is getting a brush up too, even though the game is trying to be much more accessible through new onscreen hints and an improved training mode. The world not only looks more believable, but ship designs and the strategies for using them have improved greatly. Hopefully that should please the armchair admirals as well as Ensign Newb over there.

I realize that WWII naval warfare isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But launch an entire broadside at an opponent’s broadside, blowing his ammo magazine sky high and tell me that’s not fun. If you like the military stuff, especially beyond the typical foot soldier jazz of most WWII games, then you need to check out the Battlestations series. Then you’ll be as excited as I am about the upcoming Battlestations: Pacific.

                  Good bit of gameplay:

I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

I played Midway religiously while I was off work with an injury. I can't wait for this one either.

Hopefully it's even better than Midway.
