Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

IGN: First Look

Red Alert 3, of course, is the latest sequel to the famed Command & Conquer franchise, and being a Red Alert game means that it will possess the series' standout qualities. We're talking time travel, alternate histories, over-the-top units, and quite a bit of campy live-action cutscenes with scenery-chewing performances. Going into a recent appointment to see the game, we knew that Red Alert 3 would be about another alternate universe where the Soviets, facing defeat, go back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein to rewrite history. (This is a tip of the hat to the first Red Alert, where Einstein goes back in time to whack Hitler and rewrite history.) Unfortunately, and perhaps expectedly, unintended consequences complicate things, and pretty much all the Soviets wind up doing is unleashing the Empire of the Rising Sun, a new third faction based more or less in Japan. So now it's the Soviets versus the Allies versus the Japanese.

Based on our first look (and you can experience a demonstration similar to our own in the narrated video above), this seems to be a bright, supersaturated game. The graphics engine is an evolved version of the one found in Command & Conquer 3, but the key difference is the colorful art style that makes Red Alert 3 almost look like a comic book. Producer Amer Ajami tells us that the bright tone is on purpose, as the Red Alert games are supposed to be fun while the C&C games based on the Tiberium franchise are darker in tone.
Should a battle start going poorly it's possible to pack up the mobile construction vehicle and head out to sea. You can establish bases on the water as well as on land, and many building types, such as airfields, work on both. The idea is that if your opponent has a lot of land-only units, you can seek safety upon the seas and vice versa. The naval battles will be fully fleshed out with hydrofoils, Tesla-armed stingrays, aircraft carriers, dreadnaughts and more. And for fun, there are dolphins with sonic emitters. Fans of the animal kingdom can also look forward to parachuting armored bears and attack dogs. There are about 70 units in the game, so we're barely scratching the surface here.
We didn't get a chance to see the single-player campaign, which is also playable entirely as a two-player cooperative experience. On that note, we did learn that the game will ship with built-in VOIP technology to allow you and a friend to talk to one another over the Internet. Or, you could get the Xbox 360 version, which will use Xbox Live and will be identical in terms of content, though it will have a specialized interface that was introduced in the console version of C&C 3.
What's noteworthy is that the game is well along in the development process, which means that we shouldn't need to wait till 2009 for this to come out. If everything goes on track, Red Alert 3 will launch simultaneously on the PC and Xbox 360 later this year.

Looks like there might not be a PS3 version.
Red Alert 3 for PS3, where art thou?

The answer -- nowhere to be seen. In a recent walkthrough trailer for the game, EA mentions that Red Alert 3 is coming to the PC and Xbox 360, yet fails to mention a PS3 version. This leaves us rather worried. We'd always assumed that the title would come to Sony's black behemoth, but when contacted for information, EA's Red Alert 3 community Manager commented, “I can't speak of the PS3 version right now...”

The announcement PR back in February mentioned the PS3 too. So has it been canned or is EALA just putting all their resources towards getting the PC and 360 versions out simultaneously this year, and a PS3 version will come later?

Work on Red Alert PS3 officially halted

EA has halted work on its first PS3 real-time strategy game, Red Alert 3.

The build queue has most definitely been paused, the publisher told Eurogamer, but why, or if and when it will start up again is still under wraps.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 and PC versions are unaffected by the decision, and will benefit from the refocused development resources.

The master plan is still to release the third Red Alert instalment on those platforms this autumn.

No biggie as I'll play this on PC. Even though Tiberian Wars was fine on the 360, playing with the controller just didn't work for me.

Hopefully they pick this up though because the PS3 has the mouse function so it would have been nice playing it on the PS3.

Looks to be a pretty good cast, especially for a video game.

Good stuff.

Got to try and get some OSers playing this game, especially since it has co-op campaign.

Re: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3

Red Alert 3 back on the PS3 in 1080p plus extras.

While the system may deserve the "DelayStation" moniker that many give it, delays have had some genuinely good effects on games arriving on the challenging PS3. For example, Oblivion arrived on PS3 with extra content, and better stability. BioShock made the transition to PS3 with added content and exclusive DLC. Eternal Sonata also received additional content. The upcoming Alone in the Dark features an extra chapter and bonus PS3-exclusive features like "controls." The list goes on and on.

Red Alert 3 is now completed for Xbox 360 and PC. With these two projects out of the way, EA can now focus on a PS3 version, according to Videogamer.com. "If you're a PS3 owner and you don't own a PC and you don't have an Xbox 360 you don't have to write on your Christmas or Hanukkah list that you want to have an Xbox," David Silvermann said. "You can play Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, bide your time and you'll be very pleased. We're looking at doing some really cool things with the PS3 version. Since it is shipping later we're putting in a lot of cool content and really taking advantage of both the 1080p nature and the high-defness of Blu-Ray and also the fact that it can hold just so much more space."

It sounds like PS3 owners will get added content if they're truly taking advantage of Blu-ray. But let's hope that the devs at EA don't forget an oft-forgotten PS3 feature: the ability to plug in a mouse and keyboard.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/11/04/...ally-cool-ps3/

Hopefully these extras mean keyboard and mouse support.

I picked this game up. Man, it is so deep. I haven't played it very much went through the tutorials the other night it took me like an hour or so. I am a newcomer to this game genre, but I can see myself playing it a lot once I get into it.
