I mentioned PC as well. People look at this as a Xbox vs. Sony issue, but it's really about the viability of exclusives in the current market, particularly if you're working with a smaller install base. As an aside, I've seen plenty of precedent for "we can't do this" in games and then six months later "we figured out a way to do it" so forgive me for siding with the rest of the gaming media and entertaining the discussion of a multi platform Metal Gear.

Why would you even mention PC when we're discussing consoles here? Not to mention you're also pointing to console sales, not PC sales.

I apologize, but I phrased part of it wrong. While MGS4 did have the biggest drop off, it wasn't third but he PS3 was third in software sales. The PSP and Wii had better software sales than the PS3.

Frankly, I think the discussion will be better for it. Your biases are clouding your ability to deduce facts and stay on topic. Facts are, I've made no judgments or analyses of my own. I replied to article that Pared cited, and cited another two articles and brought up a question. My personal video game business acumen has nothing to do with it.

Perhaps I jumped the gun on my selling opinion of MGS. I'll save final judgment until NPD sales for June are final sometime in July.

The way I look at this game is like Mike Tyson. Couple big blows in the first couple rounds and that is it. This is not a game that will sell high in a long term process like Halo. This is a game more for the fans I suppose. Those that wanted it got it. It will bring some people into the franchise but I don't think that many. In the 4th edition it would be pretty hard to bring people over into the franchise. GTA IV on the other is the 4th edition but it isn't a constant story line. Also GTA IV is multi and MGS isn't.

Either way, MGS has a impressive fan base. I didn't think it would sell as big as it did in the first month but it did. Still no mention of how much it sold in the USA and I think that is the one everyone is waiting for.

It's strange, Altimus, I used to think some of what you're thinking, and disagree with other parts of it, but overall I'm not so sure. There have been some recent gaming trends that have been puzzling.

The easiest thing to say is that single player games aren't going to do what multiplayer games are going to do, and exclusive games aren't going to do what multiplatform games are going to do, and there are good cases to be made for both points. Two games that shake my foundation a bit are Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect. Here you have two games with no foundation for success, both single player, both sell through the roof. One of them exclusive. Did they just hit a button? I don't know. Clearly quality games, particularly in the case of Mass Effect, which is stellar in so many ways.

MGS4 is interesting. It's doing well, but they needed it to be doing better than that. It's a lack of compromise on everyone's behalf. Konami didn't cut corners meeting any kind of deadline, and they may have thinned the apetite for the game. Also there is the japanese issue; for whatever reason Japan by and large no longer feels the need to appeal to a certain contingent of American gamers, and for that matter, American developers.

Then again, that could all go to hell when Resident Evil 5 comes out, because that game may actually outsell Metal Gear and its playing by the same rules, sand exclusivity.

Something Konami did made a certain contingent of gamers either wary or disinterested in Metal Gear. I think it has lost part of its cultural meaning, and I'm not sure why. But that, for the first time in this thread, is my two cents.

Bottom line is MGS4 can make more money, and Konami knows how to do it. The question was, did it need to make more money, and right now that seems to be the case. MGS4 couldn't just be a good game. It had to regain cultural significance. I don't think it did. Right now in the American gaming media, the big stories are RE5, SW:Unleashed and the two music franchises. Metal Gear hasn't left an echo over here, and that's what they need for the long term sales that you're talking about.

What has made an echo though? GTA IV? COD? I think that is pretty much it. It seems now a days the industry moves too quickly for games to be on the spot light too long. The only game that made an echo that was exclusive was BioShock. Mass Effect did but it seemed to be more in the news for Fox's over played sex talks which is unfortunate because that was GOY for me.

To me I look at a blockbuster which sells good and is a great game. For this generation for me it is Mass Effect, GTA IV, COD 4 and MGS 4.

As far as MGS, the lack of advertising for a game like this is bad. I don't watch as much TV as I used to but when I do I see commercials for many games like GTA IV, I remember Halo was on TV non-stop. I don't think I have seen one MGS commercial in the states which is no excuse for Sony. Your best game not only of the year but of the systems cycle and you don't even advertise it?

I guess they didn't need to since the MGS bundle is just about sold out everywhere from what I've been reading on the boards but still no excuse. I think this month was more important for Sony than Konami. Konami knew the game would sell well to great but Sony had no idea how many systems it would move. Fortunately to them it looks like it moved a lot. In August we will see how well MGS did. The June to July transistion should be an indiction although this week drop off isn't a good sign. Than again it is just the Japanese market and things work a little differently over there.

Yeah I can't recall what shows but they're definitely out there with a "Only on Playstation 3" end.

The movie trailer was awesome... I saw it at two different movies less than 2 months ago during the advertising time before the opening trailers. Had the guy's voice from most trailers.
