    Greatest RTS of all Time

    Which is it?

While watching Starcraft 2 videos and remembering some of the good ones I've played over the years this argument popped up in my mind. It's an arguable subject and I had some inner battles as well on which one I like the best.

I myself chose Starcraft simply because it was almost a pioneer of sorts for modern RTS games. It had an easy to learn impossible to master type feel to it. The multi-player was unmatched and is still played to this day on battle.net.

Plus the three distinctly different yet completely balanced races.

    What is your favorite?

Re: Greatest RTS of all Time

I haven't played that many so I'll just rank the ones I've played:

        1. Starcraft
        2. Warcraft 2
        3. Command and Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath
        4. Total Annihilation
        5. Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun

However, having watched the videos of both Starcraft 2 and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3, there could easily be a new No. 1 and 2 in six months.

Starcraft, easily. I played yesterday and there were 77k people playing.

I'm convinced the fact that the 3 races are completely distinct and completely balanced is the main reason for it's popularity and longevity.

                Starcraft for me.

Although lately I have been playing a lot of Supreme Commander and World in Conflict...Two very cool RTS games.

I was going to chastise those who didn't choose StarCraft, but now I don't have to.

I guess I'm the weird one so I'll go with-

                    Sim City 4

                    and

                    Company of Heroes

Dune 2 is my favorite. I played it a ton and every gather/build/conquer RTS that followed it has been too similar. By the time Starcraft came out, I was burned out on the genre and I couldn't get into it even though it was clear that it was a great game.

I really liked the Cossacks/American Conquest games back in the day. Seeing 8,000 units on the map at once was amazing. Taking out a full division of infantry with a well timed artillery barage was sweet or charging a formation of infantry with 300 Hussars was something to behold. I remember playing a game where we were fighting for a hill near the middle of the map for what must have been 2 hours. I think upwards of 50,000 men died in that match, bodies and horses were scattered everywhere.

I liked rise of nations too.

C&C Zero Hour! Crazy deep- who doesn't love China Inf v. USA Air?

I like Warcraft II also. The writing in that game was fantastics, and it was leaps ahead of anything else around the time.
