Another Dolby Question: Surround vs. Digital

Hi all. To those who answered my question before. Thanks.
I now my Xbox running thru my receiver with Dolby Surround, and it's a huge step up from going thru my VCR to the TV.

Now Part 2: my receiver (and the Xbox of course) is Dolby Digital ready. The optical cables necessary for this are not all that cheap- is it worth it to the average ear to switch from Surround to Digital?

    Again, thanks in advance.

Running them straight to the receiver should make a huge difference, especially if the reciever is Dolby capable.

This is the system I have here. Now if you click the back to enlarge the picture, you can see the connections.

My question is, how do I get my xbox to give me dolby sound from this? Do I need any extra cords, or cables, or some type of audio hook up connector?

            Anyone please help.

                KDRE,

In order to use the 5.1 sound options including Dolby Digital and DTS you will need to get a TOS-Link fiber optic cable.
You can find a 3 footer for about $20.
You will also need to Hi-Def pack for the X-box.

You take the fiber optic cable and run it from the Xbox pack to the back of your reciever where it says CD-DVD Optical. There will probably be a little plastic plug in that slot on the reciever right now, just pull it out, it's there to keep dust out. When you don't have a cable in it, put it back in, dust can really screw up the light signal that the fiber carries.

You will also need to go into your Xbox settings and turn on Dolby Digital in the audio settings.

You might need to play will the reciever to get it to use the signal coming in from the fiber cable. Hopefully it will auto detect it though.

Although you do get better sound technically using the fiber over RCA, the big advtange is if you have rear surrounds (and a sub), then the fiber can handle digital 5.1 signals and you are getting the sound to each speaker as they are meant to be.

WIth using RCA cables, you don't get the real surround channels. Dolby Pro Logic is an algorithm that is run on the audio tracks and mimmicks surround sound.

RCA cables just don't have the bandwidth to carry the signal for a 5.1 recording.
