War Game idea/discussion... or has it already been done?

I've been waiting for a developer to create a war game that really re-creates the "brotherhood" of being at war. Here is what i mean.

I was never a fan of how games like Call of Duty, Brothers in Arms (I think?) handled the whole scripted teammates thing... that would only die when the game pretty much told them to... And not to worry, they would be back for the next mission if your previous one was completed.

I really wish that a developer would let you select, lets say 5-10 soldiers in your "crew" to beat all of the games missions. Soldiers you go to war with and hope that most of you can get out alive. If one of these solders die, they do not come back, unless you re-load your game. If you lose all of your soldiers, you must restart a previously saved game or restart the whole game. I truly believe that this would add a very realistic touch to a war game, and that it would increase the emotion of actually losing one of your great soldiers that has been fighting beside you since the start.

I was hoping Operation Flashpoint:2 would somewhat go into this direction - but from what I've seen, it looks like they are going more towards the generalized war games such as CoD, Rainbow Six, etc.

What do you guys think? I really think it would add to a genre that has somewhat felt stale in the past couple years. (I did like Cod4 online though).

X-com was like this back in the day but more role playing. I would love to create a co-op party like you said and have 10 guys or so ala Dungeons and Dragons and try to reach objectives. You die, you die. Granted there would probably have to be a way to revive your guys if they did get "killed". But if they had their head blown off or were scattered in pieces, that would be it for them. Your team would have to make critical choices to save the wounded and dying.

Ghost Recon co-op missions were 1 and done. And man they were hard, me and a buddy played co-op on that and it was only a single map, but if you died, it was over. It got intense.

They would need to make that an option. I don't think any developer would do that as it would make it too hard for most people.

There's some mech game for the Xbox that tried that if you're dead you've got to restart the entire game. That didn't go over so well, especially since the game cost $200 because it came with a mech controller.

The survival horror game Obscure had permenant death too. There was 5 or 6 characters but if you lost your last one you didn't have to start the game over, just reload. The sequel ditched it though.

I believe it would work best with a true to life war game. An option I was really hoping for in Operation Flashpoint:2. I really loved the first one, how sometimes you wouldn't even come into contact with an enemy throughout the whole mission. Imagine bringing your guys through a mission and not meeting with anyone for a whole mission, but the next one after that gets intense and you lose a soldier... down to 9. It would really add to the feeling of brotherhood within a crew.

Your online ideas would be cool too. I'm actually really surprised that this option hasn't come out yet.

Did you play the expansion pack for the original Operation Flashpoint? It was called Operation Flashpoint: Resistance. I didn't play through all of the campaign, but I remember if someone in your squad died, they were dead for the rest of the game. I'm not sure if you could recruit more fighters later on, as I didn't play too far into it.

It is quite outdated now and if you've gotten used to next gen graphics and animations it is hard to go back.

BTW, the company that created Operation Flashpoint, Bohemia Interactive, is in no way involved in the creation of Operation Flashpoint 2. They are creating their own game from the original engine called Armed Assault 2. No one has played either game but I'd bet Armed Assault 2 will be closer to the original than Operation Flashpoint 2.

Oh and one more game that came to mind that did the exact thing you are talking about is Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. If your teammates were incapacitated or killed they would not be available in the next mission or for the rest of the campaign. It certainly made you want to watch your teammates back.
