The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf (360/PS3)

2007 PC RPG of the year is coming to consoles in Autumn 2009. Interested to see how this turns out.

    Press Release

Award Winning, Million-selling Role-playing Franchise Coming to Consoles with Thrilling New Dynamic Combat, State of the Art Visuals and Unparalleled Story

NEW YORK, Dec. 2 — At the ATARI LIVE showcase event in London today, Atari and CD Projekt RED announced plans for the global release of The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf on PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in autumn 2009.

Based on the story of multi award-winning million-selling PC role-playing game The Witcher and completely rebuilt pixel by pixel for the new generation of consoles, The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf brings the unrivalled RPG experience to Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 with a brand new combat system for thrilling dynamic action, and a new engine delivering matchless state-of-the-art visuals. The game is underpinned with the evocative and enthralling story which helped secure the original game's status as PC role-playing game of 2007, based on the mature and compelling universe created by renowned Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

"The creative vision and dedication to the quality of the player experience that CD Projekt RED bring to the Witcher games is extraordinary, and it's great to be working with them to bring the Witcher universe to console gamers," said Phil Harrison, President of Infogrames Entertainment, the parent company of Atari. "Taking this brilliantly realised world to PLAYSTATION 3 and Xbox 360 gamers for the first time is a breakthrough in the development of this important franchise."

"We're thrilled to continue our great relationship with Atari, whose refreshing focus on quality fits squarely with our own, to bring Geralt and the Witcher franchise to an even larger audience - fans who expressed to us very clearly that The Witcher would be a natural fit on consoles," said Adam Kicinski, CEO, CD Projekt RED. "Console gamers' tastes are maturing; they're looking for deeper story-driven experiences that are very hard to find in today's console market. We're developing this remake based upon the compelling narrative that helped The Witcher on PC sell more than a million copies and win more than 100 awards, building everything else from the ground up to be the definitive console RPG."

Based on the universe created by best-selling Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf puts players in the role of Geralt, a professional monster slayer who exists on the fringes of a complex society troubled by the kind of problems more commonly found on the front pages of newspapers than in a fantasy universe. Taken as a child, mutated, and trained in the arcane ways of the witchers, Geralt is a reluctant hero, who nonetheless finds himself all too frequently in the heat of battles that are not his own. In this world there is no right or wrong, only decisions and consequences.

With The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, the best PC RPG in recent years is being completely remade as the ultimate console RPG. The title is being developed by a core team from CD Projekt RED working alongside France-based Widescreen Games who provide their cross-platform DaVinci engine technology.

        Love this game.
Phobia....there is a mod somewhere that "fixes"(and adds) the dialogue.
I haven't played this in a while...I'll see if I can find the link.

I got the Enhanced addition. Which has all the fixed dialogue. Plus the fix to the bugs and other known issues. This one http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thewi...on/review.html

Also that first screen is from a city you come to in the first couple missions. The lower left hand of the screen you have to hold off attacking bandits and these swamp monsters from messing with this guys crates of goods. You can barly see one of the crates.

              Wow.
              That looked great.
Very underrated game IMO.(not by critics....just didn't get enough mainstream attention I mean.)

I don't have a PC good enough to really run any games, so I'm very excited that this is coming to consoles. Sweeeet.

Re: The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf (360/PS3)

Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf Details

IGN: The first trailer released for Rise of the White Wolf showed Geralt practicing his swordsmanship around a campfire. It's an impressive video and highlights the importance of swordplay in the game. Will melee combat be handled the same way in Rise of the White Wolf as it was in The Witcher, or are you using a different approach?

Badowski: The changes we've made to the combat system make for some of the most significant differences between Rise of the White Wolf and the PC game. Combat has been totally redesigned for the console audience; of course, the focus is still on Geralt's finely honed sword-fighting skills. When you have a controller, you expect every button press to do something immediately; the PC's timing-based system just wouldn't be as responsive as you'd expect it to be for a console game. Fights in Rise of the White Wolf are a lot more action-oriented, with everything at your fingertips – switching fighting styles, magic, blocks, parries, counter-attacks, potions and more.

Players will be able to quickly grasp the fundamentals – hit a button and attack, hit another button to block, etc. – but people who commit to mastering the system will see a lot of tactical depth. We've also gone back and re-captured all of the combat animations to make it more fluid… yes, The Witcher's combat was already motion-captured, and yes, we're doing it again. It's a big project, as I said. Of course there will also be a lot of blood, violence and heads getting chopped off… we're going for very visceral action combat to help drive players forward through the story.
IGN: PC RPGs, including the Witcher, often have gigantic inventories, skill trees and magic systems. These things can be overwhelming to manage with console controls. How do you plan to handle this problem in Rise of the White Wolf?

Badowski: The interface has been one of our biggest challenges with The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. Our designers spent a lot of time thinking about that issue; on one hand we didn't want to remove any elements from the game, but on the other, we knew that it would be unacceptable to make players scroll through massive inventories just to drink a potion. Fortunately both consoles have controllers with a lot of buttons that we can use :-). Really, though, we're working on the user interface a lot to make sure that everything's easily accessible and intuitive. We want to keep people playing, rather than rummaging through their inventories. We'll show off the changes in the future… we don't want to spill the beans about everything just yet.
IGN: How closely does the story in Rise of the White Wolf mirror that of The Witcher? Is it an exact copy? Will there be more or less content on consoles? Will some parts of the storyline change?

Badowski: We've kept the award-winning story from The Witcher intact. We never wanted to cut out any parts of the plot just to make a 15-hour game that was more inline with the expectations of the console market. RPGs are at their best when they offer a deep and really interesting story in which the player can affect the outcome, and The Witcher has that… it's a 40-hour main quest with up to 100 hours including side quests… and then you get one of three different endings and still haven't experienced everything the story has to offer, taking into account the different decisions you made along the way.

We've just gone in and modified a few quests to keep players moving; we don't want to slow the pace of the game down at all and want to make sure that there aren't any spots where players get confused about what to do next. We're fairly sure that console gamers are ready for a really deep RPG that isn't dumbed down. It's a mature game aimed at mature people, after all.

This looks really good. Looks very much like Fable. For those who have played it what sets this game apart from the rest?

It looks more gritty than Fable.
