New PS2 model coming soon

Sony announced today a new Playstation 2 model (SCPH-50000) and a new DVD remote model (SCPH-10420) for the Japanese market. The new PS2 will be able to play back DVD recordable media - DVD+R/-R/RW - burned from PCs. The new PS2 will support progressive scan output for better DVD playback image quality.

In addition the new model will lower fan noise by 30%. The iLink port, which was pretty much useless, is eliminated in the new model. Also, the DVD IR receiver is now built-in, freeing up the controller port.

The new DVD remote sports a number of new handy features. The remote can now open and close the disc tray and power on/off the system.

The new PS2 model (25,000 yen) and DVD remote (2,200 yen) will go on sale May 15th. No doubt it will come to North America soon.

There is no guarantee it will find it's way across the ocean to North America. It happens often where hardware is produced for the Japanese market only. It happened with that real fancy Gamecube (I can't remember what they called it).

It seems likely though, like how the playstation became the PSOne. Just a little repackaging to sell more units.

I think this is similar to the smaller Xbox that Microsoft is going to be putting out. Probably cheaper to make, and it'd give people another reason to get a PS2

I read or saw something where Bill Gates said there would be no smaller version of the xbox because it would be too hard to keep it cool. That's why the current xbox is the size that it is.
