Is it just for bragging rights?
There's bragging rights with some of the harder achievements, but most of the people with higher scores have usually just played more games. So it's basically a scheme to establish consumer loyalty.

Every 10,000 points adds 1 inch to your e-peen...4.5 inches right here!

Seriously all my "1000s" range from very easy (King Kong, TMNT) to long...but easy (Fallout 3, Oblivion) to somewhat hard and long, but can be made easy thru MP boosting (Euro 2008, Test Drive). Pro Evo 6 was probably my hardest 1000 because of the 100 online wins, but all the offline ones were easy.

Ultimately, achievements have become a new indicator for game completion for certain gamers out there.

Yeah, it's the new motivation to get 100% on a game...I personally don't do that, but it is cool when you unlock an achievement I will admit.
