    Rogue Warrior

UK, April 27, 2009 - It has been two full years since we last saw Rogue Warrior, and much has changed. Now under the stewardship of Rebellion, gone is the tactical emphasis of Zombie Studio's take on the antics of Dick Marcinko, and the larger-than-life soldier has now been pushed centre stage. WIth vocals provided by Mickey Rourke, a penchant for brutality and over-the-top violence, the shift in focus has certainly gifted Rogue Warrior a new zest.

Set in an Eighties world still gripped by Cold War paranoia, the events of Rogue Warrior play out against the backdrop of Reagan's Star Wars programme, with the mission on show centred around the borders of Russia and Korea. Marcinko's on a one-man mission to nail the commies, and he's willing to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve his goal.

With his rat-tailed hair and fixed grimace, Dick Marcinko's one of the most spectacularly unpleasant leads ever to have graced a videogame; a grotesque embodiment of American extremism, Marcinko provides the character, and somewhat terrifyingly he's based on a living, breathing psychopath. Richard Marcinko, the eponymous Rogue Warrior, is the author of a series of books chronicling his real-life adventures with the Navy Seals, which form the foundation of this action-driven game. Shaky foundations they may be – Rebellion admit that 80% of what comes out of Marcinko's mouth is pure bulls**t – but they're solid enough to provide an excuse for some rudimentary running and gunning.

While the majority of the gunplay will be dealt out in first person, snapping into cover pulls the camera back in order that we can get a full-on view of Rogue Warrior's larger-than-life lead. It might not be a flattering comparison, but the mesh of viewpoints and its implementation most recalls Quantum of Solace, last year's solid if ultimately underwhelming Bond tie-in.

The gameplay is superficially similar to Treyarch's effort as well, with the gunplay served in first person while the third person delivers stealth and cover. One standout sequence encompasses the different styles available to Marcinko as he skirts a warehouse, stalking in the gloomy recesses of a lobby and scoping the entrance. Two thin pops from his silenced pistol take out the lights, and a soldier arrives to investigate the darkness, only to be taken down from the darkness. 'April Fools, motherf***er,' jibes Marcinko, before fleetfooting to the fuse box to plunge the rest of the warehouse in darkness. The screen goes a sickly green as night vision goggles are switched on, and one by one the guards are picked off, Marcinko's knife disposing of them in increasingly brutal fashion in a series of environmental kills.

There may be variety on show, but the fundamentals of the game prove fairly uninspiring, an impression underlined by the bland environment that frames the demonstration. A mesh of nondescript concrete and corridors, the flat visual tone bears out the project's age; having debuted in 2007, this still looks like a first generation game, with the overall look little more than functional.

But despite the negative first impressions, there's still a spark in the game that could prove redemptive. Having jettisoned the squad based focus of the game's earlier incarnation, Rebellion have, at Bethesda's behest, played up the character of Marcinko and placed him firmly in the starring role; and if his character can prove strong enough, his psychotic charm could be the game's biggest pull.

Environmental kills are one extension of Marcinko's thirst for brutality, and Rebellion believe they're enough to distinguish Rogue Warrior from the myriad third person shooters clogging up consoles. Creep up on an unaware guard, and the camera will swing to a stylised angle, revelling in the details as Marcinko plunges his knife into an enemy's throat, pitches them over a banister or lets fly with a quickfire burst of punched stabs to a downed soldier's back. Grisly, bloody and violent, each move comes cold-heartedly approved my Marcinko himself.

The most explicit characterisation comes through the voice work of Mickey Rourke, delivering a typically muddy-mouthed and expletive-laden commentary on the action. While his voice work extends little beyond a cursory 'f**k me' to accompany an onscreen explosion, Rourke's contemporary image of washed-out eighties star, so expertly drawn upon in The Wrestler, brings a level of knowing to the game that could help it transcend its primitive mechanics.

It's part of a style that Bethesda and Rebellion would do well to accentuate before the game ships, and if the game manages to plant its tongue firmly enough in its cheek it could result in a shooter with enough character to earn itself a name amongst a backdrop of similar titles. Swordfish Studios proved recently with 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand that an absurd licence doesn't have to equate to a mindless game; if Rebellion can repeat that trick then Rogue Warrior could be well worth playing when it hits towards the end of the year.

probably..but it was still a mediocre, repetitive, one trick pony. Bethesda could certainly put their weight behind better titles, instead of pushing crap.
