EA to charge for online console sports games?

GameSpot is the world's largest source for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS Vita, Wii PC, 3DS, PSP, DS, video game news, reviews, previews, trailers, walkthroughs, and more.

In a report on CNN, John Riccitello, president and COO of Electronic Arts, suggested that future iterations of games under the EA Sports label, such as Madden NFL or NBA Live, may have some sort of online subscription model, pointing out that the potential to make new revenue is there.

Well if they do it makes it that much easier to simply stick with the Xbox versions of their games.

I was thinking about getting a PS2 after the price drop this year to play EA sports games online. I'm changing my mind now.

No hell I'm paying for any online play on any EA game. It's enough I have to pay for cable and my LIVE subscription and to pay for online play with EA games is a joke IMO.

Thanks but no thanks. I'll be sticking with the Sega Sports brand. Their games are better anyways.

One things for sure, pay for play probably sure would weed out the Cheesing Kiddies since most parents ain't gonna pay for it.

Re: EA to charge for online console sports games?

This is why EA and Microsoft can't get on the same page and get EA Sports on XBox Live.

EA wants control over their own servers, and the right to do essentialy whatever they want to online.

Microsoft wants it it's way, of course - insisting that all Live games have similar online functionality, i.e., OptiMatch and the Friends lists.

Microsoft isn't really pleased about having games like Phantasy Star Online charge extra, above and beyond the Live price. That's exactly what they're desperately trying to avoid.

Basically, it's a spitting contest between the two juggernauts.

EA caved a bit this year - they're adding custom soundtrack options to most of the "2004" games. It's not a big deal, of course, but as long as the PS2 is strong, it's probably about as much as Microsoft's going to get from them.

Not to put too fine a point on it - but if you want an online sports game for the XBox - Sega Sports is going to be your best bet for the near future (along with Microsoft Game Studios, of course).

While I personally think EA has a unbelievable amount to gain by playing ball with Microsoft, EA obviously doesn't see it that way, and they're one of the few game companies who have the ability to hold out against Microsoft for a long while.

While I enjoy a lot of EA's products, as a consumer, this stance tells me a lot about what EA really thinks of their customers - and it ain't about providing them with a good service, kids... it appears that EA'd like it the other way 'round...
