So true. This game is going to be just as amazing as their previous two. I can "feel" it!

      Rumor: Ueda leaves Sony

Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda has left Sony, Eurogamer understands.

Japanese video game development sources indicated the 41-year-old is working on finishing oft-delayed PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last Guardian in a freelance capacity.

Ueda's departure from Sony internal development studio Team Ico is one of the reasons for the game's protracted development, Eurogamer was told.

Following the completion of the game, Ueda will embark on personal projects.

In September Sony reassured gamers that Team Ico was still "hard at work" on The Last Guardian, despite the high-profile PS3 exclusive missing the Tokyo Game Show.

The previous month SCE Studios president Shuhei Yoshida gave an exasperated-sounding Last Guardian progress update:

"It's been very difficult in terms of seeing the progress: not as fast as we'd been hoping for, and the team has been under big pressure," he said.

Sony told Eurogamer it does not comment on rumour and speculation.

UPDATED: The Last Guardian Creator Leaves Sony
Sony confirms that Ueda will finish the game in freelance capacity.

Sony confirmed today that Fumito Ueda has left the company. In a statement to Gamasutra, Sony commented that Ueda is no longer working as a Sony employee. As reported earlier, he will complete The Last Guardian on a contract basis. The company added that he is "committed to completing" the project.

          LOL! What a mess.

UPDATE: The Last Guardian Is Not Canceled
          Despite pre-orders being terminated.

Update: GameStop has confirmed that its information about The Last Guardian's cancellation was incorrect. The company issued the following statement:

"The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known."

          Original story follows:

Sony has confirmed to IGN that The Last Guardian is still in production.

Today, GameStop terminated pre-orders for the game, informing customers that the title has been canceled by Sony. Customers with active pre-orders for the game received automated phone calls informing them that the title is no longer in production and advising them to change their reservation to a different game, but Sony has told us that this is not the case.

The status of the game has been a mystery as of late after the departure of the game's creator and executive producer.

For now, no release window has been announced for the game.

We've reached out to GameStop to find out the reason behind the cancellations and will update this story with any comment we receive.

Reason # 3,409,567 not to shop at gamestop.

I really don't know why anyone would give Gamestop money for a game that didn't even have a release date. You basically just give Gamestop an interest free loan doing that.

The Last Guardian still having "technical difficulties", says Sony

The Last Guardian was conspicuously absent from Sony's E3 press conference on Monday evening - early Tuesday morning UK time.

Why wasn't the long-awaited PS3 exclusive there? Because The Last Guardian is still having "technical difficulties", Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer today at E3.

"The team is back in Tokyo working hard, and there are some technical difficulties that the team is focused on right now," he told us. "That's why we don't have an update."

Problems with The Last Guardian project became apparent when the game's designer, Fumito Ueda, left Sony in December last year.

Since then, we've heard that the game's making "slow progress", and that Sony UK and Sony US are helping Sony Japan build the game.

One theory for the game's prolonged absence is that The Last Guardian will no longer be a PS3 game, and instead be ported to PlayStation 4.

But Shuhei Yoshida seemed to reject this claim.

"What does that question mean [is it still a PS3 game]? It is a PS3 game," he stressed.

Is there a danger it will never see the light of day - will it still actually come out on PS3?

"When we have confidence in saying that, we will talk about it," he answered. "But today, we are working through some engineering effort."

That's incredibly stupid, especially to work on a game for that long and not let it see the light of day.

Sony ‘Abandoned’ The Trademark For The Last Guardian. Here’s Why That Means Nothing

The Internet exploded today following news that Sony had "abandoned" the trademark for their much-anticipated PlayStation 3 game The Last Guardian. And indeed, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has filed a "Notice of Abandonment" to inform Sony that the trademark is reverting to public domain.

But despite rampant speculation, this doesn't mean that the long-troubled game has been cancelled, nor does it mean that Sony is abandoning anything. What it means is that the trademark expired. Sony had three years to use The Last Guardian's trademark, which was filed in 2009. They haven't. The game has not been released. So the trademark officially switched to "abandoned" status because that's what happens when a trademark expires and is not extended.

As Kotaku columnist Superannuation points out on Twitter, Sony would have until January 2013 to "prove use in commerce." In other words, they would have to release the game by then. That's not happening. While it's certainly possible that Sony has abandoned the trademark, what seems far more likely is that someone slipped up and forgot to re-register it in time. Because even if the game was cancelled, Sony would have enough of an interest in the property to protect this trademark.

So what happens now? Sony can request an appeal or easily file a new registration for the trademark. They don't have to worry about anybody stealing it just for fun, since U.S. laws make it difficult to "park" on a trademark without proving that you intend to use it. I've reached out to Sony just in case they have other plans. But this sure doesn't seem like a sign that the game is no more.

Sony had to "re-do" work on The Last Guardian, still a PS3 game

"The team is still working on it very hard," he replied. "There are certain technical issues they've been working on. That's the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn't seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title."

The Last Guardian failed to show up during Sony's Gamescom press conference yesterday. That absence, following similar no-shows at Tokyo Game Show 2011 and E3 in June and the news that superstar developer Fumito Ueda is working on the game as a contractor, has only served to increase the concern around the game's status.

So what's taking so long? According to Yoshida, Sony Japan Studio has had to completely re-do work that had got the game to a playable state.

"We had the game playable," Yoshida explained. "At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done."

Some have suggested the game has been switched from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4, which is reportedly due out late next year.

But Yoshida insisted The Last Guardian remains a PS3 title. "The game is developed on PS3," he said.
