Grand Theft Auto 4: How do I freeform?

I read that there's a mode in this game where you can create your own character and basically go start up some chaos in Liberty City. Blowing @#$% up basically although I suppose some folks also just explore the area. I read something about like 15 people being needed for a Free Form? Noob question I know but, where do I find Free Forms to join, or do I even need to join one maybe just Free Form by myself. Although that would be kind of stupid since I can go blow @#$% up in the game anytime I want. I want to see what Free Form is like.

Online play is where you get to make a character. Not many options there though.

Well what I mean is, I can't figure out how to start free forming. The only thing I've found in the game is in the pause menu where you can view other players scores. I'm connected online but I couldn't figure out where to go to access the online gaming area of the game. I just got a PS3 last week so I'm a complete noob and also I just rented GTA IV from blockbuster LOL So I'm completely lost when it comes to figuring out how to play online.

While you're playing single player, hit (up) on the D-Pad which will bring up your cell phone. After that pops up, scroll down to multiplayer then view the options through that... you should see all the multiplayer modes listed.

        Enjoy!

Oh okay, thanks! Other than having other people to blow up @#$% with, how is freeform different from just playing the game as is?

Free Mode, you just kick back and explore the city (with up to 16 other players). No missions/objectives, just a mode to mess around in which is why they call it "Free Mode" - Very addictive nonetheless.

As long as Traffic and Peds are high, Cops are on, Friendly Fire is on and Auto-Aim is off (with all weapons accessible as well as respawning everywhere), it is gaming heaven. I can waste eight straight hours on there without even knowing it!

I only wish I could have an overall playing time counter that includes both single player and multiplayer though.
