I don't think either game does a very good job with storytelling, but at least Gears 2 isn't completely paper thin. Like I mentioned before, I really enjoyed the campaign in Killzone 2 thanks to the intensity of the action and great AI. It really does have the best close quarters combat since F.E.A.R. However, I still enjoyed the campaign in Gears 2 more. I found it to be a more well rounded experience from the variety offered in each Act to the epic set pieces and scope. It was just a really fun roller coaster ride. It's also about twice as long as Killzone 2 and you can play it cooperatively.

I would say Killzone 2 is the better game online, even though I've played Gears 2 multiplayer, which is thanks in large part to Horde mode. The reason I don't play much of Killzone 2 online comes down to the controller for me, I just simply don't like the DS3 for FPS games and for some reason it really cramps my hands. Still though, I can tell Killzone 2 is the better online experience, and at least it has net code that wasn't written by a monkey.

Overall, go with Gears 2 for the campaign and Killzone 2 for the multiplayer.
