COD 7 - leaving WW II behind?

    Looks like it.

What might be Activision and Treyarch's last shooter set during World War II mows down another retail milestone.

During its quarterly earnings call last month, Activision Blizzard revealed that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare--likely the last Call of Duty game developed by Infinity Ward-- had sold 13 million units worldwide. Last week, Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey predicted that its sequel, Modern Warfare 2 (sans prefix), will sell even faster, moving just over 11 million units in two months.

"In Soviet Union, video game plays you!"
Today, Activision announced another Call of Duty game has sold 11 million units--in seven months. According to the official Call of Duty: World at War Web site, the well-reviewed first-person shooter hit the impressive milestone the week after its second downloadable map pack was released. The first map pack, which has sold over 2 million units, went live on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in March.

As part of Activision's developer-alternating strategy, Call of Duty: World at War was developed by Santa Monica, California-based Treyarch (Quantum of Solace). With Infinity Ward now focused on Modern Warfare 2 (and its inevitable sequels), Treyarch has apparently taken over the Call of Duty series, which will reportedly leave World War II behind. Unconfirmed leaks have the well-into-development project--code-named "Call of Duty 7"--being set during the Cold War in such conflict zones as Vietnam, Cuba, and post-colonial Africa.

Call of Duty is currently available for the DS, Wii, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

It is absolutely the best decision. Take a WWII break and it is a period that can always be revisited in the future if needed.

For anyone who played the grossly underrated Men of Valor, a Vietnam setting is amazing for multiplayer. For this gen evidence, check out the amazing Banzai map in COD WaW.

Good stuff, but why would it be it called Call of Duty 7? In the article they say that Treyarch will do Call of Duty games exclusively therefore the next game they do would be the sixth because Modern Warfare 2 would not count right? It's all confusing, but I am all for mixing it up as long as whatever era they choose the guns are realistic.

The Cuba stage should be exciting.

          Objective 1: Storm the beach

          Objective 2: Get slaughtered

what the hell are we going to be doing in a cold war game? There wasn't an actual war. Vietnam is decent, but its main draw is that it isn't as worn out as WWII.

When they have to start scratching the bottom of the barrel for Cuba and "post colonial" Africa based games, they should probably consider dropping the two game franchise.

I say just make a game entirely dedicated to the zombie mode, campaign and multiplayer. I would easily pay $60 for that.

Isnt the Clancy games future based fictional wars? I dont see why they couldn't do that here

That's what I was going to say. Or it could be fictional history based in some truth. (cold war setting, but a fictional Cuba invasion with US support, etc.) Or there's always the Gulf War, Iraq War and so much else.

I like the idea of getting away from WWII, there is so much else that could be covered and if done right, the Cold War (even though it wasn't a "war"), could be pretty cool.

As long as they remain with realistic environments or close to it, I'll be fine. I hope they never get into the futuristic games (ie Battlefield 2142), I'll keep playing the franchise. WWII though is played out, time for some new things.

Pretty much the last couple Clancy games I have played have been about killing South Americans. I don't know why Clancy has gotten in this kick, but it is what it is. Although I'm not complaining. Green Jungle enviroments are better than gray buildings of Europe or sand of the Middle East.

I like those future games because you can really make interesting art, weapons and situations. You can get really creative

I prefer the COD's made by the other company, so I will now be following the Modern Warfare series.
