Just got Final Fantasy VII. Any tips or suggestions?
I am still somewhat new to RPG's. I have dabbled in other Final Fantasy games but never beat one. I tend to get myself into situation where I am not powerful enough to beat an enemy or don't have the required magic or what not. Anything I should know about this game that would help me on my way?Tags: None -

The beginners hall found in Sector 7 goes into really good detail about how to play, and you should really talk to everyone there. There's also a few helpful items there.
Also, take full advantage of Limit Breaks. They can and will save you if you're underleveled. More importantly, the more you use them the quicker you'll be able to use more powerful ones (that's part of the equation to unlocking them, anyway).
...And don't attack the scorpion in the first level when its tail is up, contrary to what Cloud says. -

First is obvious, but save often, and in multiple files if need be. Keeping a backup save is the best way to ensure that you don't get stuck. There aren't really too many places you can get stuck in FF7 though, IMO.

To add...
You can use the area around that giant sand scorpion thing to fight a bunch of random battles for good experience (both actual and in-game...lol) and a chance to beef up your limit breaks as I recall. Also, save your Gil early on and don't go nuts buying weapons and such as money is tight in the beginning and most of what you need can be found or earned in fights.
Also, depending on how much of a completionist you are, you might want to read a FAQ or two since there is PLENTY to miss in this game. It's been awhile, but as I recall you can miss out on some of the better weapons and limit breaks based on what you do earlier in the game (they do that a lot in FF games it seems).
Most of all though, just enjoy the ride. It's one of the more engaging stories I've encountered in a video game.Comment

my tip for this game: at a later point there's an underwater area you access. AVOID THE RED THING THERE AT ALL COSTS.HELLO BROOKYLN.

Oh it gets worse as they goes along; the later the FF the more there is.Man I have stories of trying to complete 100% on FF X. certain weapon/item drop rates are absurdly low, not to mention those dan hunts and Yiazmat...but thats another topic.

Ha! Or how about 12 (I think it was 12) where there were certain treasures that you couldn't open or you'd lose the best weapon or some such nonsense. They were completely scattered and from what I remember, indistinguishable. Crazy.
To PJV: Glad you are enjoying the game. I saw it in the PS Store and thought about downloading it for old-times sake.Comment

At least that was in a chest. The damn Tournesol had you fetching rare items all over the damn world to make even rarer items to make the damn sword. Grrrr. I'm sure FF XIII will have some similar annoyance.
Back to VII. I think there's an area where enemies respawn almost immediately allowing you to level up quite a bit. Its in some subway or tunnel or something in Midgar, its been a while since i played.HELLO BROOKYLN.
